Sustained FI support helps pivotals to firm up; Sensex up 29 points, 2979.60

Led by Hindustan Lever, pivotals gained further at the Bombay Stock Exchange on sustained buying support from foreign and domestic institutional investors today.

According to the leading stock brokers, Hindustan Lever, Telco and Reliance were in the limelight. The foreign institutional investors have made considerable purchases in HLL and Telco, while domestic institutional investors were seen actively buying at the Reliance counter, they said.

Zee TV, Satyam Computer, Novartis, Glaxo, Pentafour Software, Nestle and Pond's firmed up moderately. Another scrip Astra IDL also Was seen registering smart gains for last couple of days on the BSE and the NSe, brokers said.

Reflecting the uptrend, the 30-scrip BSE Sensex opened at 2972.83 points, touched the day's high of 2987.64 points, fell to the day's low of 2965.45 points before closing at 2979.60 points, showing a net gain of 29.39 points over the previous close of 2950.21 points.

The Sensex has gained by about 130 points during the last four trading sessions on the BSE

The broad-based BSE-100 index advanced by 10.82 points to 1318.93 points from the previous close of 1308.11 points. The BSE-200 and Dollex indices rose by 1.73 and 0.68 points to 305.03 and 119.27 points as against the previous close of 303.30 and 118.59 points respectively.

The net investment by foreign institutional investors on the BSE stood at Rs 460 million while the Indian institutional investors and mutual funds have reported net sales worth Rs 200 million.

The FIIs and FIs and mutual funds were however net sellers on the NSE and reported net sales worth Rs 210 million today.

The scrips which came under selling pressure were Infosys Technologies, Dabur, Bajaj Auto, Raymond, Parke Davis and TVS Suzuki.

Total turnover on the BSE declined sharply at Rs 8.34 billion as against yesterday's turnover of Rs 12.77 billion.

Satyam Computers topped the list of turnover by registering highest turnover of Rs 1.37 billion, ITC Rs 819.7 million, Hindustan Lever Rs 633.7 million, Reliance Rs 622 million and Zee Telefilms Rs 586.2 million.

Other actively traded scrips were Telco (Rs 499.8 million), Pentafour Software (Rs 481.3 million), SBI (Rs 362.9 crore), Glaxo (Rs 258.1 million), Castrol India (Rs 167.5 million), MTNL (Rs 141.3 million), Tisco (Rs 126.9 million), Tata Tea (Rs 112.6 million), Hindalco (Rs 111.3 million) and Nestle (Rs 95.8 million).

Among the issues, ACC gained by Rs 3 to Rs 855, Asian Hotels Rs 3.40 to Rs 155.40, Cadbury's Rs 6 to Rs 421.25, Castrol Rs 6 to Rs 669, Colgate Rs 1.30 to Rs 180.30, Dr Reddy's Rs 1.25 to Rs 453, Hindustan Lever Rs 527.5 million to Rs 1740.50, Hindalco Rs 22.25 to Rs 531.25, ITC Rs 1.50 to Rs 710, MTNL Re 1 to Rs 183.30, Novartis Rs 18 to Rs 812.50, Reliance Rs 0.90 to Rs 119, Satyam Computers Rs 10 to Rs 544.25, SBI Rs 0.40 to Rs 157, Telco Rs 6.20 to Rs 139.30, Tisco Rs 0.50 to Rs 96.90, Tata Tea Rs 1.25 to Rs 300.50, Zee Telefilms Rs 8 to Rs 556.25.

The losers included, Bajaj Auto which lost Rs 12 to Rs 528.50, BSES Rs 2.20 to Rs 146.10, BHEL Rs 1.40 to Rs 242, Dabur India Rs 1.25 to Rs 378, Dr Reddy's Rs 1.25 to Rs 453.
