Competitions to unearth low-cost housing designs

The Building Materials and Technology Promotion Council of the ministry of urban affairs and employment and the Indian Society of Wind Engineering have floated jointly two national competitions inviting entries from the architects, engineers and students of architecture and engineering on design of a house for the low-income group.

The floor area of the house will vary from 80 square metres (800 square feet) to 120 square metres (1,200 square feet) and have a maximum of three storeys.

The ISWE with the support of the council has announced a prize of Rs 25,000 to respective winners of the competition in both these categories. The last date for receipt of entries in September 21.

The national competitions are intended to create awareness among the architects and designers about the need to incorporate plaster mitigation techniques. The competitions are expected to result in a number of creative designs for low- and middle-income houses.

As part of the celebrations of the World Habitat Day, the BMPTC has floated a national poster competition for disaster mitigation techniques. The theme this year is ''safer cities''.

One of the safety measures of United Nations document on habitat relates to safety of buildings infrastructure and the population from the disastrous effects of flood, earthquake, cyclone and landslides. It is in this context this poster competition for professionals has been announced.
