All-round gloom spreads to NSE; Nifty down 12 points, 866.50
A low sentiment prevailed on the National Stock Exchange today as pivotals exhibited a further downslide following absence of market operators, uncertain political situation and downgrading of Indian currency by Duff and Phelps rating agency. The S&P CNX Nifty index declined by 12.25 points to 866.50 points as against the previous close of 878.75 points. CNX Nifty Junior index finished at 1467.55 points over yesterday's close of 1473.80 points, losing 6.25 points. S&P CNX Defty settled at 700.35 points as compared to Monday's close of 713.95 points, decreasing 13.6 points. S&P CNX 500 index eased to 592.72 points as against the previous close of 600.61 points, losing 7.89 points. CNX Midcap 200 index closed at 518.14 points declining 4.96 points as compared to last working day's close of 523.10 points. The total turnover on the exchange was Rs 10.06 billion involving 43.42 million shares in 158,637 trades. The debentures traded value was Rs 1.8 million. The foreign institutional investors' investment crashed by Rs 286 million. They bought Rs 148.93 million of shares and sold Rs 435.01 million of shares. However, financial institutions and mutual funds invested Rs 184.06 million and sold Rs 25.53 million of shares, this is an increase of Rs 158.53 million. There were 276 advances, 694 declines and 91 steady scrips. About 29 securities have hit their price bands. The Indian tobacco giant ITC has registered highest turnover of Rs 1.7 billion followed by Satyam Computers Rs 1.36 billion, Reliance Rs 772 million, Zee Telefilms Rs 631.4 million, Pentafour Software Rs 559.4 million, SBI Rs 474.8 million, Dr Reddy's Rs 355.2 million, Tata Tea Rs 283 million, BHEL Rs 233 million, ACC Rs 223.2 million, Infosys Tech Rs 206.2 million, Telco Rs 199.1 million, Castrol Rs 152.1 million, Hindustan Lever Rs 146.7 million, Colgate Rs 144 million, Britannia Rs 143.4 million, MTNL Rs 138.4 million, ICICI Rs 126.2 million, Dabur Rs 120.5 million, L&T Rs 119.7 million, Tisco Rs 106.5 million, Carrier Air Rs 99.6 million, BFL Software Rs 92.5 million, HPCL Rs 75 million and ONGC Rs 62.7 million. Top gainers were HDFC which increased to Rs 63.30 from Rs 60.05, Cochin Refineries rose to Rs 238.45 from Rs 228.5, East India Hotels to Rs 207.9 from Rs 199.50, IPCL to Rs 48 from Rs 46.60 and ABB to Rs 425.50 from Rs 420.30. Among the losers were Arvind Mills which decreased to Rs 32.63 from Rs 35.45, MTNL to Rs 184.35 from Rs 196.65, HPCL to Rs 266.85 from Rs 280.60, Gujarat Ambuja Cement to Rs 189.7 from Rs 199 and Colgate to Rs 211.90 from Rs 220.95. The wholesale debt market of the NSE witnessed increased activity with trades worth Rs 6.67 billion.
