Urea case hearing on August 11

A New Delhi court on Thursday fixed August 11 as the next date for continuation of arguments in a case related to the Rs 1.33 billion urea scam.

Former managing director of the National Fertilisers Limited C K Ramakrishnan's counsel argued before the court of special judge V B Gupta that no criminal proceedings can be initiated against his client as the government and the public sector company had affirmed the deal.

However, Central Bureau of Investigation counsel V N Ozha said there was enough evidence to proceed against all the accused. He concluded his arguments today.

The case relates to the import of urea by NFL, which allegedly paid Rs 1.33 billion to Turkish firm Karsan in advance for the purchase of urea but received nothing in return.

Besides Ramakrishnan, the accused in the case include Prakash Chandra, son of former Union minister Ramlakhan Singh Yadav, and Sanjeeva Rao, a relative of former prime minister Narasimha Rao.
