Farmers body protests Monsanto-IIS tie-up

Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha president M D Nanjundaswamy has warned the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore that it would face action from the Sangha if it failed to snap its ties with multinational seed company Monsanto.

Addressing the media in Bangalore, Prof Nanjundaswamy said the Sangha would give 30 days time for the institute to withdraw its agreement with the multinational company failing which an agitation would be mounted against the institute.

Expressing resentment over the manner in which the terminator gene technology was being adopted by the multinational seed producers, he said it was against the interest of the state farmers. The institute had recently tied up with Monsanto on biotechnology research.

He also appealed to agricultural scientists across the country to protest against the terminator technology under which local farmers would not be able to raise seeds of a food crop after the second crop onwards.
