Karnataka will be first state to privatise drinking water operation

Karnataka will be the first state in the country to privatise management and operation of drinking water services to urban bodies.

The state government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Anglian Water International of the United Kingdom for forming a joint venture utility.

As a first step, the British company would undertake a study for joint approach for water utility management in Belgaum, Hubli-Dharwad, Mangalore and Mysore.

The study is likely to be completed in four months, Urban Development Minister B N Bache Gowda told the media yesterday.

The modalities for private sector participation would be finalised after the study.

The state would also set up an independent regulatory structure by passing suitable legislation, he added.
