Congress not to raise Godhra issue during Gujarat assembly election

The Congress party on Thursday indicated that it would not raise the Godhra issue during the Gujarat assembly election.

In its manifesto released on Thursday, the party accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of shattering the economy and faith of the people in the state.

The party said it would set up a commission to probe the cooperative bank scam and provide 500,000 jobs, if elected to power. It further pledged to make the state secure.

The manifesto was released by Kamal Nath, the All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Gujarat, at a press conference in the presence of the top functionaries of the party in the state.

Special courts would be also set up to probe economic scams, he said. He added that a Congress government would take the state back to the path of "boundless progress".

Asked whether Godhra would be made an election issue, Kamal Nath said, "We are talking about the future, peace, communal harmony and protecting the rights of people."

Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee president Shankarsinh Vaghela also said the party was not going to make the Godhra incident a poll issue.

Stating that the suffering of the people of all the communities should end and people should resume a normal life, Kamal Nath said, "Nothing is more important than a government, which would maintain the peace, ensure law and order."
