Haren Pandya decides not to contest
Gujarat polls

Haren Pandya, the sitting legislator from Ellisbridge and archrival of caretaker Chief Minister of Narendra Modi, on Sunday night decided not to contest the Gujarat assembly election to "avoid embarrassment to party leaders".

"I have cleared the way...they [the Bharatiya Janata Party] have declared [candidates for 181 seats] but not Ellisbridge. If things could go to this extent, I thought it fit to withdraw myself," he told rediff.com

Even after daylong discussions among top leaders in New Delhi on Sunday, the BJP had remained undecided on the candidature of Pandya from Ellisbridge.

The BJP had released the list of three candidates from Varamnagar (Vajju Bhai Dadia) Bhilodia (Upendra Trivedi) and Sayaji Ganj (Jithubhai Sukhedia), party spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi had said, "The decision on the remaining seats will be taken soon."
