Godhra will not be an election issue: Modi

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Monday endorsed Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's view that the Godhra incident should not be used for electoral purposes.

"BJP will seek votes on its past performance. Godhra will not be an issue, but if it is raised by the opposition, we will give them an apt answer," Modi told reporters after visiting the Gujarat pavilion in the India International Trade Fair in Pragati Maidan in Delhi.

Modi's comment came in the backdrop of Vajpayee's statement last week that Godhra and the violence after it should not be made an election issue in Gujarat.

The prime minister had also appealed for communal harmony in the state. When asked which seat he will contest from, Modi, who will be seeing Vajpayee when the party's Central Election Committee meets in the evening, parried the query saying: "Any out of 182 assembly constituencies, except those which are reserved."
