BJP supports PM's appeal
to abide by EC decision

Hours after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee backed the Election Commission's decision banning the VHP yatra in Gujarat, his party, the BJP, came out in support of his views.

Party spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters in Delhi that the BJP supported the prime minister's appeal that 'all organisations' should honour the Election Commission's ban and that Godhra and the violence that followed must not be made an election issue in Gujarat.

He said the BJP's priority would be to ensure that all political and social activities and election processes in the state are conducted in a peaceful, harmonious and fearless atmosphere.

Attacking the Congress, Naqvi said the party's policy after the Godhra carnage was to create tension and spoil the communal harmony in not only the state but also the country.

"The people of the country have rejected the Congress, which is committing political suicide by repeated blunders and misadventures in Gujarat," he said.
