JD-U says Bihar administration was mute spectator to violence

The Janata Dal-United today said the Bihar administration was a ''mute spectator'' to the violence unleashed by criminals in Madhepura where RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav was a candidate in the second phase of polling on September 25.

Urging the Election Commission to ensure free and fair polls in the state, party spokesman Mohan Prakash alleged that criminals were on the prowl to help the ruling RJD in the elections. Complaints against criminals often led to harassment from them instead of action, he said.

Prakash alleged that in Siwan Lok Sabha constituency, the returning officer stated that the RJD candidate Mohammad Shahabuddin was a popular candidate and his victory was a certainty. He said the party has demanded a repoll in Siwan and Jeera Dahi assembly segments after criminals unleashed terror and no woman was allowed to vote.

He said the JD-U received complaints about polling irregularities in the Nagaland chief minister's constituency on the night of September 24 and the local village council had reported the matter to the area assistant commissioner. ''We hope the EC will take it into cognisance,'' he added.
