Meghalaya to set up 230 polling booths only for women

Meghalaya has made elaborate security arrangements for smooth conduct of elections, as 11,78,263 voters, spread over Tura and Shillong parliamentary constituencies, go to polls on September 25.

Special attention would be paid to 241 sensitive booths out of a total 1,576 in the state through supply of additional force, intensified patrol and positioning of striking reserves, state chief electoral officer A K Srivastava said today. Some 230 polling centres would be kept exclusively for women voters, Srivastava said.

More than 3000 personnel from state police, two battalions of state armed police, a battalion of the IRP, ten companies of Central Reserved Police Force and about 1000 Home Guards would man the polling centres, the CEO said. Another 150 NCC cadets would also be deployed for the first time on polling day.

To ensure intensified policing of the law and order arrangement, the state's seven districts had been converted into 95 sectors, he said, with each sector under a magistrate and a police officer. In all 1,576 presiding officers and 4,950 polling officers, had been employed, the CEO said, adding that more than 1,170 vehicles were put on election duty.
