Constituency/Jhabua

It's got to be one Bhuria or the other

Tribal leaders belonging to arch-rivals Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party are in the race in Jhabua parliamentary constituency of Madhya Pradesh. The seat, reserved for the Scheduled Tribes, is traditionally considered to be a bastion of the Congress.

As in the last Lok Sabha elections, the main contest this time is between former state minister Kantilal Bhuria (Congress) and National Commission for Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes Chairman Dilip Singh Bhuria. The seat had been represented by a Bhuria leader for the last six parliamentary polls.

Dilip Singh Bhuria, who had represented the constituency five times for the Congress, joined the BJP on the eve of the last Lok Sabha polls. He was defeated by Kantilal Bhuria by a margin of more than 82,000 votes.

Nine Congress candidates have been elected from this constituency in eleven elections held here since its constitution in 1957. Bhagirath Bhanwar represented the seat twice in 1971 and 1977, respectively for the Swatantra Party and the Bharatiya Lok Dal.
