Poll in Anantnag will be put off

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Polling in the Anantnag parliamentary constituency will be put off following the murder of the Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate Ghulam Hyder Noorani in a landmine blast.

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer S V Bhave told rediff.com late tonight: "I have sent a detailed report to the Election Commission following the killing of the BJP candidate."

Bhave said that as per the law, the election has to be postponed to give the party time to field another candidate for the constituency.

He admitted that the situation "is worrying". But he was hopeful that the polling would pass off peacefully as "we have made elaborate security arrangements".

Both Anantnag and Baramulla were scheduled to go to the polls on September 18. The two constituencies of Jammu and Udhampur go to the polls on September 11.
