NCP firm on speaker's post

The crucial meetings of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party, being held separately, to resolve the deadlock regarding power-sharing and the post of speakership, commenced this morning.

The newly elected legislators and leaders of the Congress are meeting at Tilak Bhavan, the headquarters of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, under the chairmanship of state Congress president Prataprao Bhosale.

The NCP meeting is being held at the official residence of the leader of the opposition in the state legislative council and state NCP president, Chhagan Bhujbal.

The Congress has agreed to adopt the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance formula of power-sharing as demanded by the NCP. The latter, however, has dashed off a letter to the former saying that since the Congress is retaining the post of chief minister, the speakership should go to the NCP.

The NCP has threatened that the proposed alliance may not materialise unless the demand was met.
