Mamata wins Calcutta SouthThe Trinamul Congress candidates have won two Lok Sabha constituency and are leading in one other seat in Calcutta city. Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamul Congress defeated Subhankar Chakraborty of the Communist Party of India-Marxist by 214,007 votes in a multi-cornered contest in the Calcutta South seat. The party retains the seat. Sudip Bandopadhayay of the Trinamul Congress defeated Rajdeo Goala of the CPI-M by 94,200 votes in a multi-cornered contest in Calcutta North West. The party retains the seat. Former Union minister and Punjab governor Siddhartha Shankar Ray of the Congress had to be content with the third position. In Serampore, Akbar Ali Khandoker of the Trinamul Congress is leading by 2,993 votes over his nearest rival Pradip Bhattacharjee of the Congress. In Birbhum (SC), Ramchandra Dom of the CPI-M is leading by 53,684 votes over his nearest BJP rival, Dr Madanlal Choudhury. In Nabadwip (SC), Ananda Mohan Biswas of the Trinamul Congress was leading by 1,843 votes over his closest CPI-M rival, Asim Bala. Former Union minister Ajit Kumar Panja of the Trinamul Congress was leading over his nearest Marxist rival, Mohammed Salim, by more than 24,000 votes in his Calcutta North-East constituency. In his home constituency, Cooch Behar (SC), Forward Bloc leader Amar Roy Pradhan was leading by 38,088 votes over Ambika Charan Roy of the TC. In Bolpur, Somnath Chatterjee of the CPI-M was leading by 58,893 votes over his nearest rival Suniti Chattaraj of the Trinamul Congress. In Uluberia, Hannan Mollah of the CPI-M was leading by 2,828 votes over his nearest rival, Dr Sudipta Roy of the Trinamul Congress. In Raigunj, Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi of the Congress was leading by 1,573 votes over his nearest rival Subrata Mukherjee of the CPI-M. In Panskura, Gita Mukherjee of the Communist Party of India was trailing 4,400 votes behind her nearest rival Gouri Ghosh of the Trinamul Congress. In Barrackpore, Tarit Baran Topdar of the CPI-M is leading by 16,500 votes over his nearest rival Jayanta Bhattacharjee of All India Forward Bloc. In Barasat, Dr Ranjit Panja of the Trinamul Congress is leading by 500 votes over his nearest rival, Saral Deb of the Forward Bloc. In Dumdum, Tapan Sikdar of the BJP was leading by 1,300 votes over his nearest rival Anil Bhattacharjee of the CPI-M after the first round of counting. In Asansol, Bikash Chowdhury of the CPI-M is leading by 25,592 votes over Moloy Ghatak of the Trinamul Congress. In Balurghat, Ranen Burman of the RSP is leading by 558 votes over his nearest rival Bikash Barman of the Congress after the first round of counting. In Burdwan, Nikhilananda Sar of the CPI-M is leading by 27,000 votes over his nearest rival Anup Mukherjee of the BJP. In Contai, Sudhir Giri of the CPI-M is leading by 4,042 votes over his nearest rival Neetish Sengupta of the Trinamul Congress after the first round of counting. In Jhargram, Roop Chand Murmu of the CPI-M was leading by 4,151 votes over his nearest rival Dhakshin Murmu of the Trinamul Congress. In Midnapore, Indrajit Gupta of the CPI is leading by more than 700 votes over his nearest rival Monoranjan Dutta of the BJP after the second round of counting. In Jangipur, Abul Hasnat Khan of the CPI-M was leading by more than 5,000 votes over his nearest rival Syed Mustaque Murshed of the Trinamul Congress after the first round of counting. Roy Pradhan has been contesting the seat for the eighth time having won the elections in 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996 and 1998. Meanwhile, Pulak Das of the Trinamul Congress was elected to the West Bengal assembly, dethroning the AIFB's Nihar Roy Chowdhury in the Shyampukur constituency by a margin of 4520 votes in a five-cornered contest.
