BJP bags 15 seats in Rajasthan

The Bharatiya Janata Party swept the Lok Sabha poll in Rajasthan, winning 15 of the 25 seats for which elections were held in two phases on September 5 and September 11. The Congress bagged nine seats.

The BJP had fielded its candidates in only 24 of the 25 seats, leaving one seat of Banswara to the Janata Dal-United. The Congress won in Banswara.

Jaskaur Meena of the BJP was elected from Sawaimadhopur (ST). She beat sitting Congress MP Usha Meena by 58,881 votes. The BJP has gained this seat.

Prahlad Patel of the BJP defeated Vishweshwar Bhagat of the Congress by 20,678 votes in a multicornered contest in Balaghat. The BJP retains this seat.

Former chief minister Jagannath Pahadia of the Congress was beaten by Bahadur Singh Koli of the BJP by 33,332 votes in Bayana (SC) constituency. The BJP has gained this seat.

In Jhalawar, where BJP candidate and Minister of State for External Affairs Vasundara Raje Scindia was seeking her sixth term, counting began late and was on till late night.

The BJP has won the Jaipur, Ajmer, Ganganagar, Sikar, Alwar, Bayana, Sawaimadhopur, Tonk, Bhilwara, Pali, Jodhpur, Churu, Bharatpur, Chittorgarh and Kota seats while the Congress has won the Jhunjhunu, Banswara, Salumbar, Udaipur, Bikaner, Nagaur, Jalore, Barmer and Dausa constituencies.

With BJP candidate Vasundhara Raje Scindia leading in Jhalawar, the party hopes to add one more to its tally of 15 seats.

All other parties including the Bahujan Samaj Party, the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India-Marxist, and the JD-U, which had also fielded candidates, were virtually washed out.

Senior BJP leader Raghuveer Singh Kaushal won the Kota seat, beating his nearest Congress rival Ram Narain Meena by 24,769 votes. The BJP has gained this seat.

In Bikarner, Congress candidate Rameshwar Dudi defeated Ram Pratap Kasania of the BJP in Bikaner by 94,509 votes.

In Alwar, Jaswant Yadav of the BJP defeated his Congress rival Mahendra Kunmari by 57,928 votes.

Virendra Kumar of the BJP defeated Congress candidate Madhavi Choudhary in Sagar (SC) by over 60,000 votes.

BJP candidate and former Bharatpur ruler Vishvendra Singh defeated his nearest Congress rival Jagat Singh in the Bharatpur constituency by 90,002 votes.

In Churu, BJP candidate Ram Singh Kaswa defeated his closest Congress rival Narendra Bhudhania by 46,809 votes.

Srichand Kriplani of the BJP defeated sitting Congress MP Udailal Anjana by 37,377 votes in Chittorgarh.

Among the Congress losers was former Union ministers Balram Jakhar from Sikar; and, among the winners, Buta Singh from Jalore.

Dr Girija Vyas of the Congress defeated her closest BJP rival Shanti Lal Chaplot in Udaipur.

While in Jaipur, BJP candidate Girdhari Lal Bhargava defeated Raghu Sharma of the Congress by a margin of 1,40,809 votes, in Ajmer, BJP candidate Rasa Singh Rawat defeated sitting MP Prabha Thakur by over 87,000 votes. Also elected were former internal security minister Rajesh Pilot and former minister Sisram Ola.

Rajesh Pilot won from Dausa, beating BJP rival Rohitas Kumar by 6,899 votes.

Sitting Congress MP Tara Chand Bhagora won the Banswara seat, beating Janata Dal-United Rajesh Katara by 116,000 votes.

In Jhalawar, the only constituency where counting is in progress, BJP candidate and Minister of State for External Affairs Vasundhara Raje has a comfortable lead of over 100,000 votes over her closest Congress rival, former Union minister Abrar Ahmad.

The results are a blow to the Congress, which had won 20 of the 25 seats in the previous Lok Sabha election. The BJP had just won five seats then.
