J H Patel, Yediyurappa defeated as Congress wins majority in KarnatakaIn two major upsets in Karnataka, Chief Minister J H Patel lost the assembly election in Chennagiri while state Bharatiya Janata Party chief B S Yediyurappa lost in Shikaripura. As results and leads poured in from various assembly constituencies, it became clear that the Congress was set to win a majority in the Vidhan Soudha. When reports last came in, the party had won 112 seats in the 224-member house, and some more results were still to come in. The BJP was trailing far behind with 31 seats and its electoral ally, the ruling Janata Dal (United), captured just 15. The Janata Dal (Secular) of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda performed even worse, getting just eight seats. The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam got one seat and independents 12. The JD-S suffered a major setback when its state unit chief, former deputy chief minister K Siddaramaiah, failed to retain his Chamundeshwari seat in Mysore district. UNI |
