Asian Games updates: Sensational Neeraj Chopra wins GOLD

18:55   Sensational Neeraj Chopra wins GOLD
Sensational Neeraj Chopra stormed to the gold medal in the men's Javelin Throw with a best throw of 88.06.

The youngster started with 83.46 with his first throw before he decimated the field with 88.06 in his third throw.

Qizhen Liu of China was a distant second with 82.22, while Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem took bronze with 80.75.

This is India's first gold medal in Javelin Throw in the history of the Asian Games.

This is also India's second gold medal in athletics at the ongoing Asian Games after Tejinder Singh Toor's gold in shot put.

Neena Varakil has won the silver medal in women's long jump final as medals continue to pour for India in track and field events at the Asian Games.

Neeraj Chopra attempts his fourth throw of the Javelin Throw final, but he can't beat his best effort.

He registers his lowest throw of the evening with 83.25, but it is still better all the other competitors.

Neeraj leads with a best effort of 88.06, while China's Qizhen Liu is a distant second with 82.22.

Sudha Singh wins silver in women's 3000m steeplechase in Asian Games.

Sudha took second place with a timing of 9:40.03 seconds behind Winfred Yavi of Bahrain, who clocked 9.36.52.

17:41   Dharun wins silver in 400m hurdles
Indian track and field athletes continued their impressive showing at the Asian Games as Dharun Ayyasamy claimed the silver medal in the men's 400m hurdles event.

Dharun finished second with a personal best timing of 48.96, behind Qatar's Abderrahman Samba, who took home the gold with 47.66.

Japan's Abe Takatoshi claimed the bronze medal.

An impressive start for India's Neeraj Chopra, who jumps into the lead in the men's Javelin throw final with an impressive first throw of 83.46.

China's Liu Qizhen is the only other guy to throw into the 80s, with 82.22, while another Indian Shivpal Singh is fifth with 74.11.

17:21   Raghavan finishes 4th in women's 400m hurdles final
India's Anu Raghavan finished fourth in women's 400m hurdles final with 56.92, while compatriot Jauna Murmu finished two places.

The gold went to Bahrain's Oluwakemi Adekoya with a Asian Games record of 54.48, with China's Lan Thi Quach taking silver with a personal best timing of 55.30.

Bahrain's Aminat Jamal settled for bronze.

17:05   Indian track cyclists crash out in qualification round of Asiad
India began its campaign in cycling track events of the Asian Games in a disappointing note with its men's and women's sprint and pursuit teams failing to qualify for the final rounds.

In the team sprint events, both the men and women finished seventh in the qualification round out of eight participants.

The men's sprint team of Appolonious, Esow and Ranjit Singh clocked 46.862 seconds while the women's team of Deborah Herold and Sonali Chanu completed the race in 35.305s.

With a time of 4:23.251s, Indian men's pursuit quartet of Manjeet Singh, Bike Athokpam Singh, Dilawar and Raju Bati finished at the bottom of the pile at 10th in the qualification round.

Then, the Indian women's quartet of Sonali Chanu, Nayana Priyadarsini, Elangbm Chaoba Devi and Megha Gugad clocked 5:05.388s in the team pursuit to finish at fifth and last in the qualifying round.

16:21   Men's TT team move to quarters


News coming in from the boxing arena, and India's Vikas Krishan has moved into the quarter-final in the 75 kg category with a 5-0 win over Pakistan boxer Tanveer Ahmed.



Some good news coming in from table tennis as India have progressed to the quarter-finals in the men's team event, beating Vietnam 3-0 in their final group tie. 

They play quarters later in the day.  


Earlier,  India beat Iran 3-0 in the first pool match of the women's squash team event.

13:55   Beat Thailand 5-0 , hat-trick for captain Rani Rampal



India beat Thailand 5-0 in their women's hockey match.

Captain Rani Rampal scored a hat-trick while Monica and Navjot pumped in the other goals. 

The Thais made a foray late in the match and Savita makes a good save. 

And the hooter goes off and India beat Thailand 5-0 after superb performance in the 2nd half.

India have dominated this fourth quarter giving the Thais no chance.

India score another one.

Neha Goel puts a lovely square ball from the left to Navjot who coolly slots it into the goal.


India now 4-0 up.


India now get a penalty corner.

An alert Monica scores off the rebound as Sikka's effort was put out by the keeper.

But Monica, ever alert, took advantage of the chance and drags the ball into the left bottom corner.

India now go up 3-0.

Navneet makes a hash of  good opportunity, taking a shot gingerly.

Rampal is the protagonist again and scores again off the rebound.

India are 2-0 up now.

India are now foraying deeper into the D and playing with more purpose.

13:27   Sindhu in badminton final



India finally find the goal in the 3rd quarter.

Captain Rani Rampal opens the scoring for India. She gets the goal off a deflection off the keeper and ball flies into the far corner.

Following that goal, India press on the counter but the Thai keeper keeps it out.

Earlier, Sindhu beat Yamaguchi to enter the women's badminton singles final.


In men's team squash, China dominate India to win in straight sets 25-18, 25-19, 25-9 in their pool match.

13:13   India's squash and TT teams record wins



India and Thailand are locked 0-0 at the break after the first half in their women's hockey match. 

India have won 3 of their earlier pool matches.

Earlier, Sindhu beat Yamaguchi to enter the women's badminton singles final.


In men's team squash, China dominate India to win in straight sets 25-18, 25-19, 25-9 in their pool match.



In table tennis India beat Macau 3-0 in the men's 3rd group match to go 2nd in the pool.

India face Vietnam in their final group tie later in the day.

In the volleyball pool match, China overpower India to win in straight sets 25-18, 25-19, 25-9.

12:44   First Indian to enter the final

PV Sindhu beats Japanese Yamaguchi 21-17, 15-21, 21-10 to win the semi-finals.

She becomes the first Indian to make the badminton final at the Asian Games. 

Superb play from both players after the break 

At the hour mark, Sindhu takes a 15-8 lead after Yamaguchi makes a couple of unforced errors.

Sindhu inducing a few unforced errors from the Japanese and she races to a 19-9 lead.

Yamaguchi plays wide and that is match point for Sindhu.

And Sindhu does it with a superb jump shot smash to win 21-10.

Wow! Yamaguchi has renewed energy and belief in this 3rd game.

Another net chord point for Yamaguchi and the players are level 3-3.

Saina attacks the net and Yamaguchi misfires as the Indian takes a 2-point lead.

She then plays a couple of superb jump shot smash to take a 4-point lead now at 7-3.

Yamaguchi makes errors of judgement and in shot making as Sindhu goes up 9-5

Sindhu wins a marathon rally to go up 10-5.

Yamaguchi putting on a fight here as she finds the answer to everything thrown at her.

The Japanese then plays the shuttle into the net to give Sindhu a 11-7 lead at the break.

12:20   Sindhu wins first game 21-10


Yamaguchi has suddenly found the energy but Sindhu smashes well and hard to win back serve.

Sindhu losing the momentum here with a string of unforced errors.

She has now won 2 consecutive, smashes coming to her rescue.

Yamaguchi gets lucky with a net chord and another error from Sindhu gives the Japanese a four-point lead.

A shot wide and Yamaguchi is on game point.

And the Japanese takes the 2nd game 21-15 to take the match into the third game.

Sindhu made too many unforced errors and lost her lead a couple of times.

Sindhu starts with a couple of unforced errors in the first game here but manages to stay level at 2-2.

Sindhu smashes into Yamaguchi's body to take a slender one point lead in this tight 2nd game.

Peppered with a few rallies, the lead is changing hands at will. 

Yamaguchi makes another mistake at the net and she lags by 3 points now.

The Japanese looks spent for energy as Sindhu maintains her lead.

Sindhu makes a couple of unforced errors and she squanders her lead as the Japanese wins five straight points.

Yamaguchi goes into the interval with a one-point lead.

11:55   Saina loses first semis, wins bronze



Sindhu starts well after the break, controlling the net and smashing well to take a 14-9 five-point lead.

Yamaguchi making plenty of unforced errors, playing long and hitting the shuttle a couple of times into the net.

Yamaguchi wins three points in a row and then Sindhu wins a big point after an error of judgement from her opponent. The Indian now has a 3- point lead.

Sindhu does well with net play and is now on game point. 

Yamaguchi returns wide and the Indian wins the first game 21-17.

11:44   Saina loses first semis, wins bronze



It's a close start here as both players go level at 5-5.

That was a beautiful rally as Sindhu found the answers to all off Yamguchi's returns to go 6-6.

Yamaguchi under pressure now as Sindhu takes a 11-8 lead at the interval.

11:37   Saina loses 17-21, 14-21 to Tai in semis



Sindhu takes on World No. 2 Akane Yamaguchi in the other semi-final here.

Earlier, Saina lost her semi-final to Tai 17-21, 14-21 to win bronze.

11:14   Wins bronze medal

Saina Nehwal goes down to Chinese Taipei's Tzuying Tai 17-21, 14-21 in the semi-final.

She has to be content with the bronze medal. 

Saina did put up a fight in the 2nd game, going level and taking the lead twice but could not hold on to it as the more agile World No 1 found her way back and then just sped to victory.

Saina keeping Tai on her toes. 

She keeps the rallies long to go up 13-12. 

Saina wins another lucky point off the net chord to take a 14-13 lead. 

Tai returning into Saina's body and the former takes a five-point lead.

Saina makes a error and Tai at match point.

Saina plays the shuttle wide and loses the match.

Tai mixing her shots well and deceiving Saina to take a 3-0 lead. 

Saina fighting back here and has gone to level 6-6 after winning four points in a row.

Tai making Saina run around and wins 2 net points. 

Saina making too many unforced errors here but she manages to catch up and go level 10-10.

Can Saina come back in the 2nd game?

Tai has raced to a five-point lead. Her mix of netplay and defence has allowed her widen that gap. 

Saina induces 2 errors from Tai and the Indian is made to stretch and run but manages to win 2 points in a row to go just one point behind.

But Tai adds to her lead and goes up 19-15.

Tai has four game points and wins the first game 21-17. That game lasted 17 minutes.

10:43   India beat Nepal in Sepaktakraw group tie



Saina Nehwal takes on Chinese Taipei's Tzuying Tai  in the first semi-final of the day.

And the Indian is getting quite a challenge from her opponent here.

Saina opens up the court and goes level 10-10 with a jump smash.

Tai however takes the lead and goes into the break 11-10.

10:11   India qualify for Canoe final



India beat Nepal 21-5, 21-15 in their Regu preliminary Group B match in Sepaktakraw. India are now in third spot in group standings. 

India have also qualified for the semis in Canoe. 

A little later we'll have our badminton queens in action in their respective matches.
