Asian Games updates: Tajinderpal Singh Toor clinches GOLD in shot put

Women's hockey: 

India beat South Korea 4-1 in Pool B match. Gurjit Kaur scored two goals. Navneet Kaur and  Vandana Katariya scored other two goals.

Men's 400m: 

Asian champion Muhammed Anas qualified for the men's 400m final clocking 45.30s. 

Anas, who holds the national record in the event, topped his heat after clocking 45.63sec. 

Rajiv Arokia also qualified for the final.

Men's shot put: 

Tajinderpal Singh Toor  won athletic's first gold at the 18th Asian Games and India's seventh gold medal at the Games so far. 

China's Liu Yang won silver and Kazakhstan's Ivan Ivanov settled for bronze.  

Women's 400m: 

Nirmla Sheoran also qualifies for semis of women's 400m after clocking 54.09s.

Squash:

Another bronze medal for India in squash.

Sourav Ghoshal loses 2-3 to and Hong Kong's Ming Chun Au in the men's singles squash semi-finals.

At one time Ghosal was 2-0 up against Chun Ming Au.

15:37   Ponappa-Reddy lose in women's doubles quarters


India's Joshna Chinappa takes home bronze medal after losing to Malaysia's Sivasangari Subramaniam in women's singles squash semi-final.

Earlier, compatriot Dipika Pallikal also lost her semi-final to Nicola David to be content with a bronze.

In badminton, the women's doubles team of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy go down fighting to World No. 3 Chinese pair 11-21, 22-24 in the quarter-finals. 


In weightlifting, India face a disappointing end as Vikas Thakur finishes a poor 8th (out of 10 competitors) in Men's the 94 kg category.

This means there will be no medals from this event.

14:39   Dipika Pallikal bags bronze in squash


India beat Pakistan on the basis of a technical knockout to advance in their round of 16 bout.

India's Pavitra takes on Pakistan's Rukhsana Perveen in the Women's Lightweight (60kg) Round of 32.

The Indian boxer dominated that first round with a good round of punches. 

Perveen is on the defensive in the 2nd round and Pavitra lands a solid punch on her Pakistani opponents face. 

Perveen decides to quit and Pavitra beats Perveen in the 2nd round itself on the basis of a technical knock out.

14:18   Sindhu enters badminton quarters



In news coming from squash, India's Dipika Pallikal Karthik bags bronze after losing to Malaysia's Nicol David in the women's singles squash semi-final.

The Indian lost her match 0-3.

In badminton, PV Sindhu beats Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 21-12, 21-15 to enter the quarter-finals of the women's singles. 

In the badminton tie,  after the interval, Tunjung is fighting her way back and has notched up 8 points to Sindhu's 4.

But Sindhu's experience coming to the fore here and she returns at Tunjung's body to go up to match point.

Sindhu wins the match and enters the quarters after winning the 2nd game 21-15.



In the 2nd game, Tunjung makes a couple of unforced errors to lag 2 points. 

Sindhu returns some good low angled shots into the body of Tunjung. And Sindhu now has a 5-2 lead.

She races to a 11-7 lead at the break, as Tunjung's inexperience is showing here.

13:56   India's recurve men's archery team lose


Sindhu wins first game 21-17 to take a convincing lead.

In the round of 16 match, Sindhu takes 11-8 lead against Indonesia's Tunjung Gregoria Mariska in the first game.
.
There is some disappointing news from archery as India lose to South Korea in Recurve men's team quarter-final.  


India go down 1-5 to the World No 1 team.

India's Chirag Shetty and Satwik Rankireddy go down to Korean pair 17-21, 21-19, 17-21 in a see-saw contest in their men's doubles round of 16 match.

Earlier, On Day 1 of Men's Skeet shooting, Sheeraz Sheikh finished at 10th spot (72 pts) and Angad Vir Singh was on 13th (72 pts). 
In the women's event, skeet event, Ganemat was at 9th spot (68 pts) while  Rashmi was at 10th (68 pts).

13:21   Sania marches into quarters


India's Chirag Shetty and Satwik Rankireddy are stunned by Korean pair 17-21, 21-19, 17-21 to lose men's doubles round of 16 match.


The Koreans have clawed their way back into the 3rd game after the interval to go level 13-13.

Oh Wow! Rankireddy plays a sublime smash to win a point but the Koreans are hot on India's heels here.

This game is swinging like a pendulum with both getting the winners.

Korea keep the pressure and the pace as Shetty plays into the net to fall behind at 16-17.

Shetty again plays the shuttle into the net and Korea go ahead 19-17.

A wide return gives Korea match-point and Rankireddy then plays the shuttle into the net to lose 17-21.

India to serve at the start of the 3rd game and lose the first point. 

Both teams are covering the court well and have answers for each others returns and both pairs are level at 4-4.

A return into the net gives India a 6-4 lead.

India race to a 8-4 lead after Korea's make a few unforced errors.

India go into the interval with a 11-9 lead.

After the break, the Koreans have managed to claw back and go level at 13-13.

The Koreans for the first time in the game have taken the lead and go up 17-15.

The Koreans are putting the pressure with body smashes. Korea keep a 18-17 lead but India make  their way back at 18-18.. 

A long shot from Korea puts India back in the lead. 

A see-saw battle here as the fast-paced game sees both teams locked at 19 all.

Rankireddy's low smash keeps India in the game as they win  the 2nd match 21-19.

12:47   India recurve archers team lose in quarters


The Indian pair of Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have done well to keep the pace up in the second game. They are doing well with the smashes and angled shots. 

They are neck and neck at 9-9. They took the lead in this 2nd game and are converting their serve points. India go into the interval with a 11-10 lead.

12:37   Saina marches into badminton singles quarters

In Archery, India lose to Chinese Taipei 2-6 in the Recurve Women's Team quarters. 

In the men's doubles Round of 16 tie, India's Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty face South Korea's vs Chol Solgyu and Kang Minhyuk.

And the Indians are struggling as the Koreans race to a 9-5 lead.

Just too many errors from the Indian duo here. 

The Koreans go into the break with a 11-7 lead. 

After the interval, India have begun to find their feet and their range as they go to 10-11.

The Koreans then induce an error from Rankireddy as they take a 12-11 lead.

India finding it tough to match the pace of the Korean pair. 

Too many unforced errors and the Koreans have raced to a 20-16 lead.

After saving a point, the Indians lose the first game 21-17.

12:08   Beats Fitriani 21-6, 21-14 to advace

Saina Nehwal beats Indonesia's Fitriani 21-6, 21-14 in the round of 16 match.


In the second game, the Indonesian takes an early lead. Saina wins the big point after a long rally.

Fitriani has raced to a 5-1 lead and this time Saina is making far too many errors. 

The Indonesian is clawing her way back into the game and has raced to a 8-5 lead.

Both players matching each other shot for shot and Saina wins another big point to go one behind Fitriani at 7-8.

Saina has now taken the lead and heads into the interval with a 11-9 lead.

After a slow start initially, Saina has won four points back-to-back to go up at the interval.

Saina is smashing her way to a big lead here.

Fitriani then plays a lovely cross court shot to close the margin to 11-12.

WOW! Another jump smash sees Saina go up 15-11.

Saina playing brilliantly here, using up the whole court.

Saina wins the 2nd game 21-14.

A string of long rallies and a jump smash, sees Saina rush to a 14-5 lead.

Saina is unstoppable, she is moving like a dream and mixing her shots. She is attacking the net now and smashes at the open court to go up 18-5.

Saina wins the first game in comfortable fashion with a 21-6 margin.

Saina Nehwal takes on Indonesia's Fitriani and has raced to a 7-4 lead. 

Saina and Fitriani making errors at either end. Saina plays a superb smash to go up 9-5.

A deft return foxes Fitriani and Saina goes into the break with a 11-5 lead.

10:56   Good start for India's track and field athletes


Some not so good news coming in from shooting as Indias Anish Bhanwala and Shivam Shukla fail to qualify for Final of 25m Rapid Fire Pistol.

While Bhanwala finished 9th in Qualification,  Shukla finished a disappointing 11th

10:27   Anas, Arokia in 400m quarters



Time for high jump qualification where India's Chethan Balasubramanya will be seen in action.

And Chethan qualifies for the final with the best attempt of 2.15m in Qualification.


So that is a good start for India in track and field this morning as Anas, Arokia have also qualified for the quarters in 400m.

10:18   Recurve archers advance to quarters



With a timing of 46.82secs, Arokia qualifies for the semis.

Up next is India's Rajiv Arokia in the 400m heats. 

In Round 1 of Heat 4, running in Lane 5 Rajiv pulling away nicely and finishes just behind Qatari Hassan. 

The semis is scheduled for 1900 hrs IST tonight.

09:55   Recurve archers advance to quarters

Indias Muhammed Anas has qualified for the semis of the Men's 400m event in track and field. He recorded a timing of 45.63s to progress.

Recurve archers advance to quarters

Day 7 at the Asian Games starts on a happy note for India as both, the mens and the womens archery recurve teams have progressed to the quarter-finals.

The Indian women's recurve team comprising  Promila Daimary & Ankita Bhakat beat Mongolia 5-3 to enter the quarters. The womens quarters will take place at around 1100 hrs IST.

The Indian men's recurve Team of Atanu Das, Viswash & Jagdish also through to the quarters as they beat Vietnam 5-3.

They will next take on heavyweights South Korea in the quarters. This is scheduled to start at around 1400 hrs IST.
