The Indian men's doubles pair of Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna crashed out of the London Olympics following a 3-6, 4-6 second round loss to Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet of France at Wimbledon.

 

Devendro scores quick win in first round

 

Meanwhile, the second round match between India's LeanderPaes-Vishnu Vardhan and the French pair of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Michael Llodra has been postponed to Wednesday.

 

In badminton, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa made it to next round after beating Singapore's Shinta Mulia and Sari-Lei Yao in Group B doubles match.

 

A clinical performance by the Indian duo saw them win 21-16, 21-15 and post their second straight win in the group.

The Indian challenge in men's archery individual event ended on Tuesday after Traundeep Rai lost to World No. 2 Korea's Bubmin Kim 110-108 in the pre-quarter-finals.

 

Devendro scores quick win in first round

 

Tarundeep gave a good account of himself, but missed the mark at crucial moments whereas the Korean was consistent.

Earlier, Tarundeep kept India's hopes alive by beaing Cuba's Juan Carlos Stevens in the shoot-out after both archers were tied at 136-136 in the earlier round.

 

Rahul Banerjee also gave good fight but lost to Poland's Rafal Dobrowolski 136-133.

Tarundeep Rai kept India's hopes alive in the men's Individual archery event, beaing Cuba's Juan Carlos Stevens in the shoot-out after both archers were tied at 136-136.

 

Devendro scores quick win in first round

 

The Indian shot a nine in the tie-break, while the Cuban missed out after an eight to enter the last 16 stage.

 

Earlier, Rahul Banerjee gave good fight but lost to Poland's Rafal Dobrowolski 136-133.

Indian boxer L Devendro Singh made a sensational debut at the Olympics. He romped into the pre-quarter-finals of men's light-flyweight category (49kg), beating  Bayron Molina Figueroa ofHondurus in just two minutes and 24 seconds at the ExCel Arena.

The referee stopped the contest with 36 seconds left in the opening round after the Indian boxer went on the offensive from the start.

 

The RSC verdict for Devendro helped him join teammates Vijender Singh and Jai Bhagwan in the pre-quarter- finals of the boxing competition.

Indian boxer Devendro Singh walks out to a huge cheer from the crowd at the ExCel Arena. He will be in the Red Corner.

Up against him is the boxer from Honduras Bayron Figueroa Molina.

This is the round of 32 bout in the men's light flyweight 49-kg category.

One more bout to go after which we will have Indian boxer Devendro Singh will open his campaign in the 49-kg category vs Bayron Figueroa of Honduras at the ExCel in London.

It has been a mixed bag for the Indians so far.

Youngsters Shiva Thapa and Sumit Sangwan lost in their opening bouts, while the experienced Vijender Singh and Jai Bhagwan advanced to the next rounds.

 The International Olympic Committee (IOC) declined to comment on Tuesday on the controversy surrounding the spectacular performances of Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen in London but hinted she had not tested positive for any drugs.

The 16-year-old Ye won the women's 400 individual medley in world record time, with her final length of the freestyle faster than men's champion Ryan Lochte, and was the fastest qualifier for the 200 individual medley final later on Tuesday, setting an Olympic record in qualifying.

Leander Paes and Vishnu Vardhan put up a spirited performance to see off Robin Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-2 in a men's doubles match that lasted 112 minutes, at the Wimbledon.

 

The Indians will now take on Michael Llodra and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the second round.

 

Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna, the other Indian pair which was in action a while earlier, also had a tough time before getting the better of Belarus pair of Max Mirnyi and Alexander Bury7-6(4), 6-7(4), 8-6 and making it to thr next round.
