23:39   Defending 50K walk champ caught doping

Defending Olympic 50K race walk champion Alex Schwazer has been caught doping and will miss the London Games.

 

The Italian Olympic Committee says Schwazer has tested positive for doping and has been removed from the team.

 

Earlier Monday, the team said an unidentified athlete had failed a doping test before arriving in London.

 

The 28-year-old Schwazer was due to defend his 2008 Olympic title in the 50-kilometer walk on Sunday. Schwazer won gold at the Beijing Games in an Olympic record time of 3 hours, 37 minutes, 9 seconds.

20:28   US judoka tests positive for marijuana

American judo fighter Nick Delpopolo was expelled from the Olympics on Monday after testing positive for marijuana he said he ate accidentally before arriving in London.

 

Delpopolo is the first of the 10,500 Games' athletes to fail an in-competition doping test.

 

His case is the fifth positive test for a banned substance reported by the IOC since its official London Games testing period began in mid-July.

 

The other four athletes were caught before competing.

 

The International Olympic Committee said it disqualified Delpopolo from the men's 73-kilogram class, where he placed seventh. Delpopolo tested positive for metabolites of cannabis after competing on July 30.

 

He apologized to the United States team in a statement acknowledging he was "embarrassed by this mistake."

19:55   OLYMPICS LIVE: Gowda in final, but shooters disappoint
Vikas Gowda qualified for the men's discus throw final round without much fuss, but Indian shooters, including 10m air rifle bronze winner Gagan Narang, were eliminated in the preliminaries at the Olympic Games on Monday.

Gowda, who started with a modest effort of 63.52m before breaching the automatic qualifying mark, joined a selectlist of seven Indian athletes to have made it to the finals in track and field events at the world's greatest sports extravaganza.

19:54   Mary beat Tunisia's Maroua Rahali 15-6

India's MC Mary Kom won an Olympic medal on her debut when she beat Maroua Rahali of Tunisia 15-6 at the London Olympics, on Monday.



The victory took Mary to the semi-finals and she is assured of at least a bronze medal.

Quarter-finals: Women's boxing, 51kg flyweight category

Round 1:

Mary Kom off to a slow start, looking to study her opponent. But she has managed to land a couple of punches on the spot to earn a narrow 2-1 lead in the opening round.



Mary was also cautioned a couple of times in that round. She needs to be careful in the following rounds.



Round 2:

Mary now looking comfortable and has built her lead in that round. She is defending well and is timing her punches quite well.



Mary slips and falls to the ground but her score continues to rise as her lead grows to 5-3 in that round.



Round 3:

Mary is proving to be unstoppable at the moment. A combination of punches lands her opponent on the ropes as Mary is growing in confidence.



That round totally belonged to Mary, who took six points in that round as compared to her oppponent's one.

The lead is now 11-4 in favour of Mary.

Round 4:

Just 2 minutes separate Mary Kom from a historic Olympic medal. That round also belonged to the Indian, who has now been assured of atleast a bronze medal at the London Olympics.

18:22   Mary Kom vs Maroua Rahali of Tunisia in quarters
MC Mary Kom of India will be looking to seal an Olympic medal on her debut when she takes on Maroua Rahali of Tunisia in the quarter-finals of the women's 51 kg flyweight category on Monday.

The winner of the bout will be assured of atleast a bronze medal as they advance to the semi-finals.

There is another huge contest in the offing later in the day when Ireland's Kate Taylor takes on Great Britain's Natasha Jonas. Both the girls have plenty of support at the ExCel Arena and it will be one hell of a contest.

It's a double disappointment for India. 

Gagan Narang has managed only 20th spot in the qualifying for the Men's 50 meters Rifle 3 Positions. 

Narang totaled 398 in the Prone series, 377 in the Standing and 389 in the Kneeling series to aggregate 1164 and bow out of contention.

Sanjeev Rajput ends up in 27th spot.

He aggregates 395 in the Prone, 378 in Standing and 388 in Kneeling for a total of 1161. He was never in contention for a final berth after a vapid start.

Sanjeev Rajput's efforts on the day have simply not been enough. 

In the first couple of series in the Kneeling position, the Indian has had scores of 98 and 96. 

Gagan Narang has got 97 in the first series in the Kneeling position. 

Both the Indian shooters are out of contention for the final.

After a superb start in the Prone position, where he totaled 398, things have gone horribly wrong for Gagan Narang in the Standing series. 

The Indian, a bronze medalist in the air rifle event, has totaled 377 in the same for a overall aggregate of 775.

This implies he goes into the Kneeling series in the 24th position. Qualification for the final seems difficult now. 

As regards, Sanjeev Rajput, he has totaled a miserable 378 in the Standing series for an aggregate of 773.

This means he is now out of the top 10.

He is in the 19th position.

Sanjeev Rajput has got the worst possible start to the standing position, hitting 96 in the first series. His subsequent efforts read 95 and 46. 

Gagan Narang though is very much in the frame. He is in fact fighting for the top position in the qualifying.

02:36   Bolt retains Olympic 100m title
Usain Bolt of Jamaica successfully defended his Olympic 100m title when he stormed home in 9.63 seconds at the London Olympics.

Fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake finished second with 9.75 seconds while Justin Gatlin of the US took bronze with 9.79 seconds.

Bolt didn't get off a fast start but blazed his way towards the end to send the packed stadium into celebration.

02:13   Britain's Ohuruogu takes silver
Sanya Richard Ross of the US won the women's 400 metres ahead of ahead of Great Britain's Christine Ohuruogu and DeeDee Trotter of the US.

Sanya, 27, won the race with a timing of 49.55, while Ohuruogu took second place with 49.70, while Trotter finished a close third with 49.72.

"This win is impossible to describe. I worked so hard for that and I prepared for this moment over and over for the last four years. I just fought all the way to the end," Sanya said after the race.

02:08   Champion Kipruto fails to defend title
Ezekiel Kemboi of Kenya won the gold medal in the men's 3000m Steeplechase event at the London Olympics.

Kemboi won the race with a timing of 8:18.56 ahead of Russian Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad, who won his second successive silver medal at the Olympic Games.

Kenyan Abel Kiprop Mutai took the bronze medal.

Olympic champion Kiprop Brimin Kipruto failed to defend his title after he fell on the penultimate lap and never recovered from that setback.

01:54   Pistorious bows out in semis of 400m
Comments from South Africa's Oscar Pistorius after coming last in his semi-final of the men's 400m at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday.

Pistorious, who has artificial legs below the knees, finished last with a timing of 46.54. He made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics.

On competing in the Olympic Games for the first time:
"The whole experience is mind-blowing. My aim was to make the semifinal. It's a dream come true. Thanks to everyone for their support. I've got the relay in a few days."

On being asked to swap bibs by semifinal winner Kirani JAMES (KEN) at the end of the race:
"As soon as we crossed the line, we're friends. It was very kind of him. We share a similar life. It's what the Olympics is all about. It's great to make good friends."

01:27   South African Pistorius finishes last in 2nd semis
South African Oscar Pistorius failed to make the final in the men's 400 metres semi-finals at the London Olympics.

Pistorious, who has artificial legs below the knees, finished last with a timing of 46.54. He made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics.

The second semi-final was won by Kirani James of Grenada with a timing of 44.59, while Lalonde Gordon won the first semis with 44.58.

It is building up to be one of the most thrilling 100 metres races ever in the history of the Olympics Games.

Justin Gatlin of US is a major contender for the title of the fastest man on the planet after he clocked the fastest time in the semi-finals.

Gatlin clocked 9.82 seconds to win the first semi-final at the London Olympics, while Yohan Bolt cruised to victory in the third semis with 9.85s, while Usain Bolt managed 9.87s in the second semi-final.

22-year-old Yohan Blake wins the third semi-final of the men's 100metres ahead of Tyson Gay of the US.

Blake took first place in 9.85 seconds despite cruising for the last 10 metres.

"I am the beast, so I have to go back and stay focused for the final," Blake said after the race.

Justin Gatlin registered the best timing in the semis with 9.82s, while Usain Bolt won his semis with 9.87s.

Ryan Bailey of the US was second with 9.96 seconds to take his place in the final.
