'BPO is an opportunity of a lifetime'
Mumbai, February 18, 2003: 'It will create jobs, foreign exchange and growth. It's a great chance for India,' says Ramesh Shrichand Damani.
e : there is so much talk abt outsourcing and bpo now. do you think india really has good potential in tat area or is it another dotcom like hype?
Ramesh S Damani : Good Afternoon. Thanks for joining. Let's start. This is a great opportunity for India, the best in our lifetime. It will create jobs, forex and growth.
tulsee : good evening mr.damani...sir i have inherited george williamson, excel industries, eid parry, bharat gears,graphite..most of them good div yeilds.i would like to replace them with mcdowell, gati concur....what wud u advice
Ramesh S Damani : They all look good. However, it might take some time for them to blossom.
vishal : there was so much media coverage about nasscom conference this year. wat did you think of it? is it all hype only?
Ramesh S Damani : The hype was less than other years. I was the only broker/financial types at the ITES-BPO segment. Only 4-5 analysts were there.
tulsee : mr damani how many no of scrips should a small investor be in vested in...i mmean what is the ideal no of scrpis an investor should have in his portfolio
Ramesh S Damani : In a portfolio of one million, no more than four. It should be focussed and well researched. However, it is hard to achieve such discipline.
vishal : i am a software professional. do you thnk it is better for me to invest in shares on my own or opt for a mutual fund instead?
Ramesh S Damani : It is more rewarding to do it on your own. However, if you have no time then use a mutual fund. Maybe even an index fund.
baracuda : 3 stocks that i have been followingare bhel, alstom and bharat forge .do youas anexperienced broker would advice me to invest in theseat todays market price please advice
Ramesh S Damani : They all should do well over the next 2-3 months.
baracuda : even if the govt does not increase the fii limit in sbi willyu still be a buyerat310and why
Ramesh S Damani : It is a cheap stock. That is why I own it. If foreign institutional investor limit increases, it is a bonus.
tulsee : what is the future of TEA n FERTILIZER cos for the next fiscal..many of them r avilable at their yr lows...accompanied by good div
Ramesh S Damani : Tata Tea looks attractive if you are bullish on commodities.
GURU : WHICH ARE THE SAFE BETS IN THE EVENT OF WAR . WHICH ARE THE SECTORS WOULD AFFECT MORE.
Ramesh S Damani : Something like Bharat Electronics which I own, maybe gold shares.
SEENA : DO YOU THINK PAKISTAN WIN THE CUP
Ramesh S Damani : Australia.
baracuda : does divis lab make good investing for the long term doent it look attractive at a floor price of 130
Ramesh S Damani : It does look attractive.
richa : Dear Ramesh Ji, about three weeks back or may be month ago, I had attended this chat session when you were positive about Krebs. I bought a few hundred shares and thay have lost more than 20 percent in no time. Shd I still hold on or get out of it. what could be the target price, please help!
Ramesh S Damani : Krebs is an illliquid share. Don't keep a few months view. The company pays a dividend of Rs 7 and stick to it. I own a small amount.
hellosir : hello sir please help me i have 500 of pentamedia and 400 of silverline and i had got thm for 21 and noww since 2 days therss a rise in those shares they are for 14 rs what shud i do shud i wait or get them off sir?
Ramesh S Damani : I am not bullish on these shares.
Sumeet : Im buiding a 10 year portfolio for my son who is 6 and have chosen BHEL, SBI, Geometric and eserve. Do these look good from a long term point of view?
Ramesh S Damani : My son is 16 and I have been trying to do the same for his education. I had bought BEML and sold it recently. Currently I have Tata Honeywell and Mcdowell in the portfolio. E-serve looks great. However, the other I would review from time to time. Good luck.
AdityaDamani : Do u think titan industries has had any effect due to the present gold hike?...becoz of its gold reserves?
Ramesh S Damani : It may be a one time gain. Nothing better.
HARSHA : I am an employee of cmc and had bought 750 shares of cmc inder esops at 66 per share . it is now trading at 500 . the lock in period ends in a month . should i keep the or sell them ?
Ramesh S Damani : I also bought CMC at low valuations. While most have been sold I still have a core holding that I would wait. At Rs 750 crore market cap, it is a cheap stock.
basantmyshasura : if india looses against zimb dont yu feel that saurav and his bunch of admen should be made to walk from safrica to india so by the time they reach wagah border we will have a new team
Ramesh S Damani : Maybe it would be better if we gave them less sponsorship or linked pay to performance.
SANJAY : WHAT IS YR ADVISE ON GEOMETRIC- SHD WE CONVERT INTO E SERVE OR SBI
Ramesh S Damani : I like both these stocks and Geometric.
girishapte : sir,-/i baught macmillan from 220 upto 140 my average prise is 178 what should I do ? why results are not out yet as scheduled date of mitting was 29-01
Ramesh S Damani : I am holding on. They need to increase turnover of ITES buisness. Let's hope they do that. Results may come later since it is a December year end company.
guptaone : ub@95/- & kingfisher prop@20 costs average 50/- per share of ub prior to demerger! hence combination of these two r looking more attractive than mcdowell! what do u advise?
Ramesh S Damani : They all look good. I own all of them. Mcdowell value has to be unlocked. United Breweries has been done. Now earnings need to catch up. Kingfisher is cheap.
mahalaxmi : Damaniji, i feel post budget SBI will single handedly move the index up. what do you say sir?
Ramesh S Damani : I remain bullish on it.
guptaone : do u think WTO norms comming into effect from 1st apr/comming budget will help liquor industry? what r the expectations?
Ramesh S Damani : Yes. If they make duties uniform and reduce the rates, which they are planning to do. In terms of WTO, they need to reduce duties. Quantitative restrictions are gone.
Hari : sir, d-link had ealier mentined that they will buy back its own shares from public market. will it start in this financial year? what will be a fair price??/
Ramesh S Damani : I think they have postponed that.
tulsee1 : SIR AS U SAID 4 SCRIPS IN A 10 LAC PORTFOLIO ....wat would be those 4 scrips
Ramesh S Damani : e-serve, Tata Honeywell, Mcdowell, you fill the fourth. I own all of them.
richa : are u still bullish on mid-cap pharma or enthusiasm has waned away? do you still recommend buying IPCA, Lupin and Krebs at current rates. please advise.
Ramesh S Damani : I own all of them. Generic drugs will be a big story out of India. I am bullish on the sector.
mvm2 : Whats ur Advice for the week to the small investors like me ?
Ramesh S Damani : Get invested. Market should head higher post-Budget.
dipesh : What do u think abt Mphasis BFL ? It is very highly rated by a lot of analyst
Ramesh S Damani : It is expensive. BPO is still small and still losing money. A better bet would be Tata Infotech, which has tied up with the leading call centre player Sitel.
StockLover : E-Serve comprises 40% of my entire portfolio. Is it the time to load up or lighten up ?
Ramesh S Damani : That is quite a position. At what price did you get in and what is your conviction level?
GURU : COULD YOU PL.EVALUATE DEMERGER OF COPPER BUSINESS FROM INDO GULF CORP. IS IT WORTH HOLDING INDO GULF AFTER DEMERGER.
Ramesh S Damani : Fertiliser business has value but not much. The key would be the share merged into Hindalco.
harishbelman : Hi Damaniji,Pls advice on Hero Honda?Sell,Hold,Buy?
Ramesh S Damani : Hold and buy. The stock is good on yields.
dev : does tata honeywell look good to buy @274 levels
Ramesh S Damani : Yes.
SanjaySomani : sir do you think that if the elctricity amendment bills are passed in the bugedt session of parliment...then TATA POWER may be due for a big rerating
Ramesh S Damani : Maybe, though telecom investment would hold it back. ABB and Alstom Power would benefit.
mittal : can u explain us what is genetic drug and what is their potential
Ramesh S Damani : You must mean generic. Viagra is a patent medicine by Pfizer. When its patent expires, you can make a copy of it (generic) using a different process and sell it. Indian companies are capitalising on that process. Reddy, Matrix, Ranbaxy are doing this business well.
Hari : sir, indian telephone industries is a telecom public sector.will it be considered for disinvestment.now it can be bought at an affordable price. is it advisable to buy ITI sir.
Ramesh S Damani : That would be Mr Shourie's decision. So I would say the chances are good. However, they have too many employees (40,000) and telecom is slowing down. On balance, I would avoid it.
kumarswamy : what is your picks in tech mid caps, pl advice about my picks - polaries, hughes, geometric, tata info, kale, infotech,
Ramesh S Damani : They all have potential. Kale has an analyst meet tomorrow. My picks remain what I keep saying.
pavuluri : what are the sectars and expected stock with in these sectars out perform the market with a two year time period???
Ramesh S Damani : BPO and Indian pharma look good. Power might join the race.
basantmyshasura : do yu still maintain your position in indian hotels like sbi dont yu feel it is a cheap stockand the only negative for it is the war fears should one buy
Ramesh S Damani : Yes. I do. I sold some though earlier.
seemaapte : sir,-/i baught bpcl at 300 about 1100 shares do you see any hope that it will touch that leval or i may have to pore money ?
Ramesh S Damani : Be patient. It is a good company doing well. The IPO is giving it an overhang.
sandeep : hi ramesh, how r u?a big fan of urs?from a trading point how far do u think silverline can pullback
Ramesh S Damani : Why bother with that calibre of stock? There are other fish in the pond.
Eisen : mr damani can u suggest the best investment for an NRI
Ramesh S Damani : As you would appreciate, there is no one right answer. Buy something with a 2-3 year view since you can't monitor it daily. Also remember your portfolio must bea t the exchange rate in order to make money.
AnandBhatt : Sir,My continuation of my previous question? Most people were thinking that the war overhang is making the budget a non issue.Do you think so?
Ramesh S Damani : We can't quantify the risk of war, especially bio/chem war. Budget should be bullish, so stay invested.
gvs : Mr.damani-- do u think the ralles like the one that ha occured in last two days should be used to establish short positions?
Ramesh S Damani : No. I am bullish, so that would not make sense.
Sumeet : Please suggest 2 of your best picks in contract manufacturing pharma, from 2-3 year viewpoint?
Ramesh S Damani : Reddy, Suven and Matrix as a wild card.
SanjaySomani : sir..please tell your sources of researcg and which magazine jourinals and newspaper you read
Ramesh S Damani : Forbes, Fortune, Businessweek, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Red Herring, Wired to name some.
gvs : mr.damani, with over Rs.29000 cr in reserves and this years profit of rs.9000 cr, dont u think that ONGC is a value buy -- also the recent oil find is an additional plus point?
Ramesh S Damani : It is value, but the company is more like a post office. They have no intellectual capital or core competence. At Rs 65,000 crore (Rs 650 billion), it is an expensive stock.
anaam : sir,i have been investing in Fag Precision since it was Rs 53/-They have declared a div of Rs 4/-plus a probale revised buyback.& may be a duty reduction in the budget.I want your second opinion Is it a wise investment?
Ramesh S Damani : The numbers look good and bearing industry is doing well. However, I don't own any.
pavuluri : do you think that all recomendations from Kelkar comiitte would find place in FM budget speech??
Ramesh S Damani : I am hopeful.
AnandBhatt : I CANT SEE THE PREVIOUS CHAT TRASCRIPT OF 11TH FEB.I WANTED TO SEE IT AS I COULD NOT LOG ON TO THAT CHAT.CAN YOU PLS TELL REDIFF TO PUT IT UP.THE LAST CHAT THEY HAVE PUT UP IS 4TH FEB.THANKS
Ramesh S Damani : I will tell them again.
mittal : sir do u beliew that too much information or reading can confuse
Ramesh S Damani : Too much info yes. Too much reading no. They are different.
cooll : Hello RameshCan you please let me know if this is the right time to enter stocks and if it is right time to enter into Infotech and Banks
Ramesh S Damani : Yes, I think it is the right time in banks. I like only SBI, HDFC Bank and Karur Vysya.
SanjaySomani : IS TATA HONEYWELL A MULTIBAGGER ?YOU SEEM TO BE QUITE BULLISH ON IT
Ramesh S Damani : I am hopeful.
eroych : HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ENGINEER INDIA? IS IT A BUY AT CURRENT PRICES?
Ramesh S Damani : No. Too expensive on a market cap basis.
dipesh : Mr Damani , what about the debts that McDowell has incurred, you say mkt cap is cheap, but do u think that the debts are reasonable
Ramesh S Damani : Good question. They own seven of the ten largest brands in the business. Huge real estate and other holdings. If management decided to unlock value, the debt is not to worry about.
AnandBhatt : Sir.PLEASE ADVISE ON THIS ONE. when is the electricity bill being passed?DSo you feel one can take up a position in ABB and Alsthom before that?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ramesh S Damani : Yes. It may be passed soon. I own both.
tulsee1 : sir how do u think vijay mallya goin to reduce debt
Ramesh S Damani : When he sells to a strategic investor.
ManojFMS : Hello Sir, How are you? I have been tracking the IT Education sector closely for the last three years. Do you see the tertiary / trickling down effect on the volume based upturn in the IT services segment helping the Education industry ? Also, the companies ( NIIT, SSI and Aptech ) have become more cost-efficient now by reducing the flab. In light of the SSIs recent announcement to takeover Aptech, and the overall expectations, would you recommend exposure to any IT education company ? Particularly, how does SSI look to you considering that they will be No.1 in FY 2003
Ramesh S Damani : ssi has raised a lot of money and created a lot of hype.never delivered. they lostfocus in 2000 and will pay ahuge price. it is cheapon market cap but i am notconvinced yet
sham : WHAT IS THE BEST PIC IN IT EDUCATION, NOW WITH SSI TAKING OVER APTECH -IS IT A GOOD CHOICE?
Ramesh S Damani : SSI management has been a huge disappointment. I would avoid it.
gsv : Mr.damani what makes u so bullish about current market-- with everything positive about the budget discounted and the war is looming large
Ramesh S Damani : At Rs 3300, it is not discounted.
prakash : Can you break up a bull run between1. Operators 2. Institutional Investors 3. FII 4. Retail ... can u give points to all out of 100
Ramesh S Damani : I don't know, but retail investors will start this bull run. Not institutional.
dipesh : this has been asked b4, but how would you split a breweries/beer portion of your portfolio into UB, Kingfisher and Mcdoweell (percentage wise)
Ramesh S Damani : My larger holding is Mcdowell. I had sold United Breweris on its way up. It traded as high as Rs 280 last year.
mittal : what is the difference between information and reading from stock market point of viw
Ramesh S Damani : Reading builds a data base. Information could be rumours/gossip/fact.
seemaapte : sir,-/you are not replying my query on glaxo i baught it at 660 some 3 years back it was told that wto shall permitt pharma co. to charge as much they wan';t & dpco shall be wind up do u see some light ?
Ramesh S Damani : Only after 2005. However, I would hold on at these rates.
AnandBhatt : Sir,is TVSE worth buying at these levels?
Ramesh S Damani : It looks good.
heee : What you mean by "at 3300 it is not discounted".... bit of latin... can you explain....
Ramesh S Damani : Market is closer to its 52-week low than high.
ritu : it has been long since you have given us any trading call? pls. oblise!
Ramesh S Damani : SBI.
mittal : sir currently i am getting information from many sources but i dont know what to beliew and what not .what should i do
Ramesh S Damani : Develop your own conviction. That is the key to long-run money in the market.
ruthwick : Ramesh, in the present situation, which is the best investment proposition? euquities, real estate, gold??
Ramesh S Damani : Asian equites and gold.
seemaapte : sir -/when glaxo & burroughs shall merge ? should i buy burroughs to average out ? as baught glaxo at 660 & burroughs at 550 ?-/so after merger my average prise shall come down.please reply sir i had lost lot';s of money in mnc pharma
Ramesh S Damani : Keep the faith. I don't have a time line on the merger, but it will happen. They are both cheap stocks.
anaam : sir,Have you invested in Gold currently
Ramesh S Damani : No. thanks a lot for joining. See you next week. Bye.
