'I am standing for certain principles'

July 10, 2002: Colonel Lakshmi Sehgal, was in Bombay for just a couple of days while on her campaign in the run-up to the presidential election. Despite the pressure of time, she agreed to participate on The Rediff Chat and answered a few questions. Excerpts:

Administrator : Col Lakshmi Sehgal will be with us in 10 minutes. Please stay online.

Col Lakshmi Sehgal : Good Morning, I am here to answer your questions

abdul : Col Sehgal, what is your opinion of Abdul Kalam the person? You must be aware that he is a disciple of your late brother-in-law Dr Vikram Sarabhai.
Col Lakshmi Sehgal :  I know that he is a disciple of Vikram Sarabhai, my brother in law. I have nothing personal against Abdul Kalam. But it is also a fact that my brother in law was not in favour of making a nuclear bomb or any weapon of mass destruction. He want science to be used for the benefit of the people.

Anoop : Also, pls can u explain what are ur priorities if u become president, what u will do to the people and how u will make India a force to reckon with ??
Col Lakshmi Sehgal : Anoop: I would make India relevant mainly through our unity and integrity, which today is at a very low level.

Ramesh Menon : You have seen history pass you by. Hoenstly, how do you feel today as you see narrow minded and illiterate politicians derail the country's future?
Col Lakshmi Sehgal : It is very unfortunate indeed to see such politicians and the situation must be remedied. But it is the people who elect such politicians and we must get the people to elect better politicians.

ashokn : Good evening Col.Lakshmi. I am sure you respect Mr.Kalam for what he has done for India. Are u opposing him for political reasons ro do u really think u will make a better President
Col Lakshmi Sehgal : I won't be so presumptious as to feel that i will make a better president. But I am standing for certain ideals and principles, mainly to preserve the unity and against the communal violence which has infected our country. and which must be stopped before it spreads any further.

user 1 : Colnel , I am intrested about your days in the INA witn NETAJI.How confident were you on those days to acheive independence with the help of japanese and german help. What would India be toady , if we had won independence with the help of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan.Don't you think the world will be viewing as different than how it looks at us
Col Lakshmi Sehgal : Our taking the help had little to do with the German and Japanese ideology. We raised our own army, our own finances through Indians, and fought all on our own. Japanese General Tojo had hailed Netaji as the leader of Asia.

Col Lakshmi Sehgal : To All who have raised doubts about my health: I would like to mention that I treat about 30 to 40 patients every day, seven days a week, in my clinic at Kanpur, often with power cuts.

Col Lakshmi Sehgal : Thank You all for your questions. I have to leave now.
