The L M Singhvi Chat

Dr L M SINGHVI (Fri May 16 1997 21:6 IST)

One can draw lessons from the experience of other countries but we have to understand our own problems and we have to find our own solutions. The welfare state in Britain is striving for greater efficiency and economic viability; that is perhaps a universally applicable general principle. But we have to apply a general principle to our own specific situation, and we have to make our welfare state more efficient, more citizen-friendly, and more cost-effective.

Vishakha (Fri May 16 1997 21:6 IST)

Mr Singhvi, how would you describe the second generation Indians in London, what kind of an attitude do they bear towards India. Surely, India mustn't be home for them like it is for their parents? What do you think?

NANDINI* (Fri May 16 1997 21:6 IST)

Ahmed: I am glad to know that Melina whatever got her, er, marbles back!

typhin (Fri May 16 1997 21:6 IST)

How do you view Britain's hand in settling issues in Sri Lanka. Do you believe they are not in contact with the LTTE?

B (Fri May 16 1997 21:6 IST)

Will our future relationship be based on commerce rather than the relationship of nearly four hundred years? Are British businessmen as vexed with the inertia of our reforms as the Americans are?

Ahmed (Fri May 16 1997 21:9 IST)

Nandini: To make you less of a philistine, Melina Mercouri was the famous Greek actress who became minister for culture in the Papandreou administration. The Eligin Marbles refer too..heck, go and check for yourself.

Dr L M SINGHVI (Fri May 16 1997 21:9 IST)

I think the best part of our bilateral relationship is a mutual trust and respect. That was reflected, for instance, in the extradition treaty that we made in the Indo-British Partnership Initiative that we established. In the environmental partnership that we have established, many details can be given, but there is a constraint of time.

Dr L M SINGHVI (Fri May 16 1997 21:12 IST)

AHMED: Melina Mercouri only asked for the Elgin marbles, she did not get them back.

NANDINI* (Fri May 16 1997 21:13 IST)

Ahmed: Melina lady lost her marbles... and trying to explain that you end up loosing your cool! Dangerous this, this explanation business! By the way where I should check it up? Any clue?

dpawan (Fri May 16 1997 21:14 IST)

Is there any way one can stop the Anti-India activities taking place in some of the religious places in UK and US?

Babu (Fri May 16 1997 21:14 IST)

Someone earlier asked you about the Kashmir sentiment in England. The JKLF and other extremist groups seem confident that Labour will tilt their way. Do you believe that will happen? In our zest to cultivate the Tories, we appear to have forgotten Labour MPs completely and this appears to have backfired on us now. Is this not correct? Will Labour backbenchers cause India hassles on the Kashmir issue?

Dr L M SINGHVI (Fri May 16 1997 21:14 IST)

Due to other appointments, I will be able to answer only a couple of questions more.

Pat (Fri May 16 1997 21:16 IST)

Sir What do you think will the british monarchy survive?

NANDINI* (Fri May 16 1997 21:16 IST)

(See, Ahmed! She hasn't got her marbles back!) Dr Sanghvi, could you answer me about this London-based culture society? I am sure NRIs like me can do our bit.. And tell me, how do we stand legally about getting back our marbles, swords and other things?

Vishakha (Fri May 16 1997 21:16 IST)

Mr Singhvi, how do you think the Conservatives are going to revive their party?

B (Fri May 16 1997 21:17 IST)

What a shame the high commissioner cannot spend time to exchange views on such an imporant issue, despite coming late. Indians will never change no matter whosoever they may be!

NANDINI* (Fri May 16 1997 21:18 IST)

B: Exactly, my sentiments! But I am sure Dr Singhvi was only joking

Walter (Fri May 16 1997 21:18 IST)

Was Peter Bleach, the man behind the Purulia air drop, expecting to be arrested by the Indian authorities, as he claims?

Dr L M SINGHVI (Fri May 16 1997 21:19 IST)

BABU: We have never neglected any of the three parties; in fact, in this regard, we can claim that we have cultivated them all with a view to let them have a clear and correct picture of our concerns. In fact, the composition of the Indo-British Parliamentary Group is a good example of our equally pro-active relationship with the three political parties, with all of whom I have been personally in touch throughout.

NANDINI* (Fri May 16 1997 21:20 IST)

Dr Sanghvi, could you answer me about this London-based culture society? I am sure NRIs like me can do our bit.. And tell me, how do we stand legally about getting back our marbles, swords and other things?

Jai maharashtra (Fri May 16 1997 21:22 IST)

HC sir, is your job going to be tougher?

NANDINI* (Fri May 16 1997 21:25 IST)

Dr Singhvi..? Ditched us????????????

Dr L M SINGHVI (Fri May 16 1997 21:25 IST)

B: Our relationship has to be multidimensional. Commerce is an important component of international relationships, but then, there are political and cultural aspects which are equally important. Moreover, we must develop people-to-people relationship through educational and civic institutions.

Dr L M SINGHVI (Fri May 16 1997 21:27 IST)

Thank you very much. If there are any more questions, please do not hesitate to put them to me at our next meeting. Until we meet again...

Jai (Fri May 16 1997 21:28 IST)

dpawan (Fri May 16 1997 21:30 IST)

Is there any way one can stop the Anti-India activities taking place in some of the religious places in UK and US? What steps are you taking in UK regarding this as a HC?
