The L M Singhvi Chat

L M Singhvi, India's high commissioner to the United Kingdom, was late for the chat, having been waylaid by traffic on his way to India House, London, from another engagement.

On the Rediff Chat, Dr Singhvi -- a constitutional lawyer of considerable distinction who is now India's longest-serving envoy to the Court of St James -- demonstrated his eloquence when he explained what Indians can expect from Tony Blair's government.

Babu Ismail (Fri May 16 1997 19:54 IST)

Is His Excellency in?

James Donald (Fri May 16 1997 19:57 IST)

Dr Singhvi, Claire Short, the Labour MP who criticised Tony Blair, and is now the minister for overseas development has already attacked India on the child labour issue. Is this a sign of things to come? What is the Indian high commission doing to nip such things in the bud?

Babu (Fri May 16 1997 19:58 IST)

Singhvisaab, you have been high commissioner for almost seven years (is the longest by any Indian to the court of St James?), what would you reckon is your biggest achievement?

Lal (Fri May 16 1997 20:0 IST)

Mr Singhvi what do you think was the reason for the Labor party coming to power? What is their attitude towards India?

N A Muthuswamy (Fri May 16 1997 20:1 IST)

Hullo, doctor, I believe the Kashmiris are whooping in joy at the Lanbour win. Kaufman and company have always been on their side. Do we need to worry? Or are relations between India and Britain so good that we don't have to worry?

Jamshed (Fri May 16 1997 20:4 IST)

Hello all, and especially Mr Singhvi, sir I'm very curious about one aspect of Indians setttled abroad, Why do they become MORE Indian and conservative when they are out of India? While in India everyone is pining to ape the west, what is the reason that this tendency stems from?

Nikhil (Fri May 16 1997 20:10 IST)

Dr Singhvi, our assistant editor in London Amberish K Diwanji informs us, is expected in the next five minutes, so please stay logged in.

mani (Fri May 16 1997 20:10 IST)

NANDINI (Fri May 16 1997 20:14 IST)

Hi everyone, Dr Singhvi in??

Babu (Fri May 16 1997 20:14 IST)

I am sure you have met Mr Blair. What impression have you gained of him? As a post-Raj kid, does he have any fondness for India?

NANDINI (Fri May 16 1997 20:16 IST)

Hey Babu, pal, don't shoot your guns like that! Give the guy a chance -- at least wait till he gets in! Right, folks?

NANDINI (Fri May 16 1997 20:17 IST)

Hi Maya.. Long time no hear?

Maya (Fri May 16 1997 20:17 IST)

Dr Singhvi, Claire Short, the Labour MP who criticised Tony Blair, and is now the minister for overseas development has already attacked India on the child labour issue. Is this a sign of things to come? What is the Indian high commission doing to nip such things in the bud?

Vishakha (Fri May 16 1997 20:35 IST)

Good evening Mr Singhvi, its a real pleasure. A few months back there was a lot of controversy about the Gandhi letters that were to be auctioned by Philips. Could you tell me what really happened and where are those letters now? Please reply.
