Questions K C Pant didn't answer
Raj (Thu May 14 1998 8:0 IST)
Congratulations Mr. Pant!!
mo (Thu May 14 1998 8:0 IST)
Was the H bomb test a dud as only 15kt was registered ?
Venkat R (Thu May 14 1998 8:2 IST)
Mr. Pant, is India going to induct N-eeapons? Is AGNI ready for induction? Please elaborate on the state of AGNI
sundaram (Thu May 14 1998 8:3 IST)
Mr. Pant
I think we should develop the neutron bomb. Do we have the technical capacity? What is your
opinion on this?
CIA (Thu May 14 1998 8:11 IST)
Sir, India right know is facing lots of problems is it correct time to go for nuke test. Why can't we use the nuke for the power generation and other utilities...?
Raj (Thu May 14 1998 8:11 IST)
Congratulations Sir! Is there going to be a major crisis with these sanctions imposed on us by the big bullies of this world? And can we cope with it?
CIA (Thu May 14 1998 8:13 IST)
Sir, every news paper says budha smiled II, then Gandhi cried. How faught for the country in Peace manner.
buddhas laughter (Thu May 14 1998 8:13 IST)
Mr. Pant: We all feel really, really happy about this. In your
opinion, when (if) do you think the world will be rid of nuclear weapons?
PNA (Thu May 14 1998 8:13 IST)
Mr.Pant>> Do you think there will be a blockade of crude oil imports into India due to the sanctions ??.If so, what should be done to wriggle of this tight situation since oil is so import important to any economy.
Sunita (Thu May 14 1998 8:14 IST)
Mr Pant: Did India possess these nuclear arms when you were the defence minister in Rjaiv's cabinet?
Akshay (Thu May 14 1998 8:16 IST)
Mr Pant: There was a report in a section of American press that the BJP government was planning to go for nuclear tests in their 13 days rule. Is this true?
Amit (Thu May 14 1998 8:18 IST)
Sir, Don't you agree that now Indians all over the world should unite and work for a common cause. What is the message for us Indians?
Shamsher Singh (Thu May 14 1998 8:18 IST)
Mr Pant: According to the Washington Post, Mr Vajpayee wanted to conduct a test in May 1996, but was thwarted by the scientists who wanted him to prove his government's majority before that. This shows the China threat is hogwash. The BJP is just trying to build up a constituency by projecting itself as a guardian of Indian interests. Much like what the fascists did in 1933.
Sunita (Thu May 14 1998 8:19 IST)
Mr Pant: Who is a greater threat to India, CHINA OR PAKISTAN?
Manohar Shyam (Thu May 14 1998 8:21 IST)
Sir: I do not dispute the Chinese are India's main security threat, but I think the rapprochement that Rajiv Gandhi worked so hard for is finished. 22 years of hard work has been frittered away. As someone who will cast the framework for the NSC, what are the other security concerns that disturb you?
Gussa Kumaoni (Thu May 14 1998 8:22 IST)
Mr Pant: The government pledged that it would conduct the nuclear tests after it undertook a security review. The haste in which this week's tests were conducted indicates that there's more to it than meets the eye. Please share your views on this with us.
K G Mohandas (Thu May 14 1998 8:25 IST)
Shri Pant: Do you think it is now time for us to sign the CTBT?
Rajul (Thu May 14 1998 8:27 IST)
Mr Pant> Do these tests mean that the government is going ahead with their actual deployment and those of the missiles Prithvi, Agni and Surya?
Akshay (Thu May 14 1998 8:28 IST)
Mr Pant: Will you use the third class Indian produced goods if the West goes for sanctions?
Shamsher Singh (Thu May 14 1998 8:30 IST)
Mr Pant: Your colleague and fellow Kumaoni, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, has spoken of tipping our missiles with nuclear warheads if Pakistan conducts a nuclear test. I think this government's approach to security issues is immature.
Akshay (Thu May 14 1998 8:34 IST)
MR PANT: I agree with you that our boundaries should be strong. But do you feel that a country like India and Pakistan can afford to have nuclear bombs when both the countries do not have money to feed thier people? Don't you feel that it is in the interest of both the countries to be friends rather than going nuclear and wasting money? Please give an honest answer and not a politically motivated one

Dear Pantji,
Can you name three benefits, just three, to the Indian people which are not emotional or jingoistic, but are pragmatic and will go to resolve issues like the mind-boggling poverty, the AIDS pandemic, an uncontrollable population and the complete lack of educational opportunities at all levels?
K G Mohandas (Thu May 14 1998 8:38 IST)
Shri Pant: Do you think it is now time for us to sign the CTBT? Do you think it is now non-discriminatory?
Sunita (Thu May 14 1998 8:43 IST)
Mr Pant: I appreciate your answer.
Akshay (Thu May 14 1998 8:44 IST)
Mr Pant: Do you think Chinese have their base in Arunachal Pradesh?
Rajul (Thu May 14 1998 8:44 IST)
Mr Pant> Does this Government favor going to war with Pakistan or China to liberate Kashmir, Aksai Chin or Tibet?
Sunita (Thu May 14 1998 8:45 IST)
Mr Pant: Pardon me for my ignorance. But can you tell me, from where does this Macmohan line begins and ends? And also about Siachen, how does it help China and Pakistan?
Shamsher Singh (Thu May 14 1998 8:46 IST)
If the BJP was so concerned about the security ambience then its 1996 manifesto made no mention of China, and yet it wanted to conduct a nuclear test. What does that say about the BJP's true intentions?
sundaram (Thu May 14 1998 8:51 IST)
Mr.Pant
China in their map, claims lot of Indian lands and islands, Indonesian islands, Malayasia part, Filipino
islands? How to solve this? Is this not threat to whole Asia?
Rajul (Thu May 14 1998 8:52 IST)
Mr Pant> Is there a possibility of any more tests or this THE END?
Rajul (Thu May 14 1998 8:53 IST)
Mr Pant> Why don't we stop cribbing about Chinese bases in Myanamar and instead build our own in friendly countries like Vietnam or Taiwan?
Venkat R (Thu May 14 1998 8:54 IST)
I repeat again, Mr. Pant, are we going to induct Nuclear Weaapons? What's is the status of AGNI?
buddhas laughter (Thu May 14 1998 8:55 IST)
Mr. Pant: There is a feeling among some of us, that too many Indian ministers are talking "irresponsibly". For ex., on Tuesday, Dr. M.M. Joshi (HRD Minister) said that India would fit these nukes onto missiles. May be it will (should). But, why can't someone else (say, the defence minister/secretary) tell this (preferably, at a later time)?
Why should the HRD minister shoot his mouth off, as if it is an Internet chat?
sans (Thu May 14 1998 8:56 IST)
Friends, with all your all your righteous patriotism, have any of you personally suffered the pain of war? Of having a telegram delivered home to say that a loved one is dead? I can see nothing else in this entire exercise but a fascist agenda which will bring India and Pakistan to another bloody war because we do not have the will to go back and solve our problems. For all the bravado, how many of us are willing really to go back to India and begin paying back all the dues we owe- Our subsidised education most importantly.
Rajul (Thu May 14 1998 9:2 IST)
Mr Pant> It was a pleasure indeed to have the honour of talking to you. Jai Hind!!!
sans (Thu May 14 1998 9:2 IST)
Pant Ji. What weakness? My brother is right now sitting on the Siachen glacier in sub-zero temperatures while we chat, doing more for the country's good than any set of nukes. When he travels home on leave he has to bribe the TT to get into a 3rd class compartment from Jammu. That's because your tribe has made corruption a virtue to be emulated. And now its time to blow up a few bombs so that we a people defeated by our poverty and disease get a moment of respite and world attention and feel good. Its like feeling the warmth of our own pee!!
sans (Thu May 14 1998 9:27 IST)
Rajul, Raj, Sundaram, TNAP, Pantji. Thanks for a great discussion. All of us will leave this chat room changed in some way forever. "The Nation remains" and in another 50 years when India is on top of the world economically, culturally and scientifically, one of us will look back to this chat and say "WE DID IT" Vande Mataram!
