The Joginder Singh Chat

Mr Joginder Singh (Fri Nov 29 21:31:40 1996 IST):

Bedi: CBI is a compact organisation. There is no question of it being a divided house. This organisation like other organisations in the government and private sector is heirarchical. People have to deliver the results or find other slots for themselves. There is no scope for complacency. About transfers, they have been ordered after a transparent trasfer policy where nobody is allowed to stay for more thhan 7 years. Those who spent more than 14 to 30 years in one place were shifted out. It is essential to have such a polpicy so that nobody develops vested interests. It is also necessary that officers have experience of all the segments of the CBI working.

Khalnayak (Fri Nov 29 21:32:06 1996 IST):

Either Mr Jog ran out of answers, or, having come up with what he thinks is his best yet, has decided to stick to it! What's going on, people?

V R L Iyer (Fri Nov 29 21:32:47 1996 IST):

Where are the good old days of John Lobo and V R Lakshminarayan? Why has the CBI become so corroded? When did the decay in the organisation begin?

B S Bedi; (Fri Nov 29 21:33:23 1996 IST):

Is it not true that Satish Sharma was tipped off on the CBI raids?

Khalnayak (Fri Nov 29 21:33:34 1996 IST):

Mr Jog, isn't seven years long enough to develop, and then service, vested interests? I am referring to your response to Mr Bedi.

B S Bedi; (Fri Nov 29 21:33:35 1996 IST):

By someone in the CBI?

B S Bedi; (Fri Nov 29 21:34:07 1996 IST):

Why does it take the judiciary to give you guys shock treatment before you get moving?

B S Bedi; (Fri Nov 29 21:34:19 1996 IST):

Why can't you do it on your own?

B S Bedi; (Fri Nov 29 21:34:29 1996 IST):

India, I weep for you.

Ram Behari Sharma (Fri Nov 29 21:35:07 1996 IST):

As one of the most important government officials in the country, would you have some suggestions on how corruption can be combated in this country? What, Sir, is the root of corruption in India? What about corruption in the CBI? Would you say it is non existent?

Simran Andrews (Fri Nov 29 21:35:20 1996 IST):

Mr Jog, I read what you wrote in reply to Mr Bedi, about the transfer policy. Maybe we need a similar policy for politicians and ministers? Transfer them out in a year or less so they don't develop vested interests?

Samuel Benjamin (Fri Nov 29 21:35:32 1996 IST):

What action, Mr Singh, are you planning to take against the Ambanis, Dhoots and Ruias who provided the funds in the JMM bribes for votes case. I believe you are going slow in the Ambani matter because they are close to the PM, while you are taking strict action against the other two.

V R L Iyer (Fri Nov 29 21:36:16 1996 IST):

Mr Joginder Singh (Fri Nov 29 21:37:15 1996 IST):

Thanks Dad: I appreciate your concern for your country. But it is better to stand up and fight than to ran away. However bad it may be, however some people may be worse I still love it and would be loyal to it and to my job. Fighting corruption requires not only investigating agency, but also the evidences and witnesses. Nobody will be spared if evidence is available. Do not be disheartened. Do visit your country. You must understand that my officials have to put in on any given day between 12 to 16 hours. There are no holidays, there are no Satudays and Sundays. If we do not work on holidays we can not catch up with work. My motto is do your best and get out gracefully when your inning and timing is over.

mog (Fri Nov 29 21:37:35 1996 IST):

nothing has changed in our great country nothing will...

Ram Behari Sharma (Fri Nov 29 21:37:57 1996 IST):

Simran Andrews (Fri Nov 29 21:38:50 1996 IST):

Mr Jog... having put in 16 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, for ever since your outfit was established, how many cases - cases involving big names, prominent people - has the CBI solved? Can we have some facts and figures here, please?

Mr Joginder Singh (Fri Nov 29 21:39:33 1996 IST):

Iyer and Benjamin: There is no question of decay in the organisation if anything it has become more stronger and vigorous and it is capable of taking action against anybody who is found to have violated the law of the land. The only requirement is the hard evidence. And not the hearsay or the rumours.

Simran Andrews (Fri Nov 29 21:40:55 1996 IST):

Mr Singh, judging by the fact that thus far, no major public figure has been nabbed by your organisation, what are we to imagine - that the cases against them are all uniformly based on hearsay, with no hard evidence whatsoever?

Mr Joginder Singh (Fri Nov 29 21:41:45 1996 IST):

Bedi: please do not weep. Do something for the country. I am only reminded what Kennedy said: "Ask not my countrymen what country can do for you. Ask yourself my countrymen what you can do for the country."

Khalnayak (Fri Nov 29 21:42:12 1996 IST):

Mujhe lagta hai ke they must be issuing, along with the posting orders, complete instructions to these top officials on how to answer questions without saying anything! Thus far, lots of speeches - but not one single answer dealing with specifics!! Wah!!

mog (Fri Nov 29 21:43:22 1996 IST):

*hard evudence. And not the hearsay or the rumours.* There you have it, oh people of India. It is only hearsay or rumours that our country has been bled dry by it's rulers over the past 49 odd years...there is no hard evidence. Hard evidence is reserved for petty thieves stealing rs 50/= or you and me defaulting on income tax by a few hundred rupees! meanwhile people like Pandit Sukh Ram still occupy bungalows (12, Safdarjung...) and have fleets of government benefits...but all that is *hearsay or the rumours.*

Simran Andrews (Fri Nov 29 21:43:42 1996 IST):

Mr Singh, everyone from Carlos the Jackal to Burlap Billy have been accused of killing Kennedy - must you also become one of his assassins, albeit posthumously?

Mr Joginder Singh (Fri Nov 29 21:44:51 1996 IST):

Guys: Thank you and good night. It is 9.45 p.m. Thanks for asking for questions. Good luck and GOD SPEED.

Lois Lane (Fri Nov 29 21:45:04 1996 IST):
