The Lt General Jagjit Singh Aurora ChatAarti Arunachalam (Fri Dec 13 21:40:27 1996 IST):
Nonita, I could not agree more. It is as if no other commander existed. My father says he cannot remember who commanded the Indian forces in the western sector. If your grandpae had not signed the surrender with Niazi, we would not have known him either. It was on Rediff that I learnt that the general drafted the army's defence strategy. All along, we thought it was Sam's handiwork. Personally, we think your grandpae should have been made army chief. If we did not have the silly notion that martial races should not head armies! ravi (Fri Dec 13 21:40:44 1996 IST):
What makes the Pakistan army so powerful that
heads of the country rush to the chief of the army staff?
I never did undesratnd how tha rmy stages a coup in that
country. Given that can this ever happen in India ?
Pardon me if you believe this to be a silly question to
an army man of such honor .. Lt General J S Aurora (Fri Dec 13 21:40:59 1996 IST):
Arti: Thank you for a very searching question. There is no doubt that the call of jehad does excite people's religious sentiments and people are willing to fight and kill for it. In battle however cool thinking and planning can achieve much greater results in the long run. Fighting is a profession and you competence and ability to keep cool in battle is vital to get the best out of your troops. The battle cry or jehad for carrying out the final charge does help. And it is often at that juncture some form of battle cry does take place. But that is only for a short duration like bringing things to the boil. Arabindan C (Fri Dec 13 21:42:26 1996 IST):
What was your battlecry? Venkat (Fri Dec 13 21:43:26 1996 IST):
Sir, one last question. How do you rate the Indian army in the world.
I know we had some bad experiences in Sri Lanka, but I think those
helped a lot. Do you agree ? I wish at least i/3rd the
politicians were like you. Balaraman Kandoth (Fri Dec 13 21:43:39 1996 IST):
Sir, do you believe the Indian government forgets its heroes too quickly? gupta (Fri Dec 13 21:43:48 1996 IST):
I think this was a good question -"behind every successful man is a woman - where do you place naniami?"
After all they say Mrs USA PRESIDENTS always rule the country. They cause the cold war to end. Yes,
what was her role? Nonita (Fri Dec 13 21:45:10 1996 IST):
dear aarti: thank god for the information explosion -- if only the past and present government's recognised who the country's true heroes were!! thanks. ravi (Fri Dec 13 21:45:35 1996 IST):

Lt General J S Aurora (Fri Dec 13 21:45:49 1996 IST):
Ravi: Ravi I will answer your this question also. But it is the last one! These days the politicians in the country are going through a bad period. But I assure you they are not quite so bad and unprincipled as the politicians in Pakistan. You may not know that General Ayub was invited by the President to take over and once he took over he decided why have the President sitting in the chair he might as well take that over too. So the army rule in Pakistan once invited has now become a habit. Aarti Arunachalam (Fri Dec 13 21:47:05 1996 IST):
General, Sir, you must be very tired. Many thanks for speaking with us. We are honoured. May God bless you and Nanima always. Aarti Arunachalam (Fri Dec 13 21:47:53 1996 IST):
Nonita, everyone else, nice talking to you. good night! gupta (Fri Dec 13 21:48:24 1996 IST):
If you are asked to name one hero in last 50 years on India
history, whom would you name? And whom would label as the devil?
How do you think Mrs. Gandhi as a person? How much do you think was
she responsible for Pubjub and Assam problem?
Jaswant Srikantan (Fri Dec 13 21:49:27 1996 IST):
Good night, General! Thank you for being here with us tonight. I salute you. Lt General J S Aurora (Fri Dec 13 21:49:39 1996 IST):
Balaraman: Thank you Balaraman. I am glad that you asked me this question. I feel that in India the politician like to hog all the importance and seem to feel that giving any importance to service officers may create a difficult situation in the country. It is not so. Indian army and the other two services are professional. They have never got entangled in politics like the Pakistan army. So long the politicians carry out their job well and give due recognition to the army, there can be no question of the army trying to destabilise the country. gupta (Fri Dec 13 21:49:44 1996 IST):
Thanks a lot. Please visit us again. gupta (Fri Dec 13 21:52:02 1996 IST):
Damn, it is 1.30 AM(JST). My wife should be furious.
I have to rush back home. Joking. Balaraman Kandoth (Fri Dec 13 21:53:06 1996 IST):
Thank you, Sir. I cannot thank you enough for your kindness. Lt General J S Aurora (Fri Dec 13 21:54:38 1996 IST):
Arabindan: My battle cry for the Bangladesh operation was "Leave the highways and follow the by-ways." This enabled us to get round and near the enemies' establied defences and reach Dhaka in a short time and winning the war within 13 days. You must agree this battle cry paid generous dividend. Lt General J S Aurora (Fri Dec 13 21:57:17 1996 IST):
Folks: Thank you for asking me some interesting and searching questions. It is my first experience on the Internet. I have greatly enjoyed it. Let's hope we will meet again. Good Night. Thank You. gupta (Fri Dec 13 21:57:25 1996 IST):
Ah! Looks like we can have some more time. Can you tell us the role of naniami.
At least your grand daughter won't get angry later. It won't help making her angry,
as she may not help you write your book and we would be the actual looser. Nikhil Lakshman, (Fri Dec 13 21:58:54 1996 IST):
Sir, Many thanks for appearing on the Rediff Chat. We enjoyed the experience too! We hope to meet with you again. God Bless. Good Night. Lt General J S Aurora (Fri Dec 13 21:59:03 1996 IST):

General Aurora SAT SHRI AKAL.
It is a great pleasure to be in touch with one
of the finest soldiers of India.
It is a great great pity during the entire eighties
the great state of Punjab, the land of five great
rivers, rice and wheat bowl of India and home of
so many brave and patriotic soldiers have gone
thru crisis after crisis. The calm we witness now
may be perlude to a bigger storm that may embroil
in the near future if prudent and correct steps
are not taken immediately. What is your advice
first to the Government Of India and then to the
citizen of India so as to avoid any further bloodshed
in the future. abhijit ghosh (Fri Dec 13 22:54:14 1996 IST):
Do you thin it was a mistake to create to the
state of Haryana. The reason I am asking it only
truncated the Punjab state as it existed prior to
this creation. Also it created the CHANDIGARH
problem, besides other problems associated with
water sharing and maintenance of language usage. abhijit ghosh (Fri Dec 13 22:54:14 1996 IST):
