Questions Mr Deve Gowda did not answer
Sadhu Yadav (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:14 IST)
Deve Gowdasaar, Namaskara. Sir, I thought you did a fine job as prime minister and I am not saying that because I am a Kannadiga. Still, I am rather perturbed by what you will do now. What do ex-PMs do? And especially someone who is as young (by Indian political standards) as you? How do you think you can contribute to this nation?
Holenarsipur (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:15 IST)
Hullo, Prime Minister. What is this I say about the Congress attacking you because you once praised the RSS. If I am not mistaken this must be when you praised the RSS role during the Emergency. I hope you will not deny your respect for the RSS. Do you agree with the common belief in India that the RSS and the BJP are evil?
Pandurang Shastri (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:18 IST)
Deve Gowdaji, I cried when I heard you speak in Parliament on April 11. I did not expect them to treat you so badly. Please tell us why Kesri withdrew support. Was he upset that you did not give him importance or was there something more to all this?
nt (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:21 IST)
dear shri Gowda. have you ever wondered about tying up with bjp. a tie up of that kind, atleast in karnataka, will surely ensure the rise of your party. it might very well be the turning point for the people of karnataka, since that will imply, less quarrel, and more focus on development.
hegde (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:22 IST)
sir, don't you think there should be a code of ethical behaviour for politicians, with a simple legal condition: guilty until proven innocent. maybe it will curb corruption!
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:23 IST)
So Gowda is not in yet.
Jatindra Amin (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:24 IST)
Hi Tahseen, you asked some pretty good questions yesterday.
Nikhil Lakshman (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:25 IST)
The SPG sealed off the Maurya CyberClub where this Chat is being held at 1700 hours. We await the former Prime Minister's arrival.
hegde (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:25 IST)
Awaiting your arrival!
hegde (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:25 IST)
WHY NOT CALL FOR ELECTIONS AND DECIMATE THE DAMN CONGRESS?
Jatindra Amin (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:26 IST)
The man loses power, not its trappings!
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:26 IST)
Amin: Thanks, but unfortunately Javed did no answer the good ones. All celebrities like easy to answer questions. Have no patience or inclination to deal with serious stuff. Where R U located Amin?
Jatindra Amin (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:27 IST)
At the moment, am in India. What about you, pal?
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:29 IST)
Lakshmi: Yes, Gowda is the right man, not Congress, to ask how long Gujral will last because Gowda is the one who is pulling the rug from under Gujral. "If I can not be a PM nobody else from UF should become one."
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:31 IST)
Amin: I am in New Jersey (US of A). It is pretty hot today, what about India?
illora (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:33 IST)
Good evening Mr.Deve gowda. Mr.Gowda, let me ask u a very direct question. Do u think subnational identity (e.g gujrati, marathi etc) is stronger than the sense of indian nationality in the avarage indian's mind ? I think this problem is very much there in our country and has its root in many interstate problem e.g caveri water issue etc. What do u think?
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:37 IST)
Mr. Gowda: What is your agenda as an ex prime minister?
Holenarsipur (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:37 IST)
Deve Gowda ji, what are your observations on this, the 50th anniversary of freedom? Is there any hope for our country? Or are we destined to live with people like Laloo Yadav?
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:39 IST)
Mr. Gowda: Your actions belie your words. How come your supporters shouted out Mr. Gujral from UF convention? Why did you not try to pacify your delegates and bring the PM back?
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:40 IST)
Mr.Gowda: Is it true that lalloo tried to enlist your support to stay in power?
amit (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:41 IST)
Mr. Gowda, realistically speaking, how long do you think (personally speaking) this government will last given the present conditions?
Lionel (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:41 IST)
Dear Mr Gowda Thank U for your quick answer, the second part of your reply was not for me. You r a veteran politician,do you think the politicians have let us down by the circus that is being staged in various parts of our Dear India,in its 50th year of Independence.(Bihar is worse than a circus)

I think India should have two party system. What do you think?
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:43 IST)
Mr. Gowda: It seems you enjoy no support from any quarters in Karnataka. Many important personalities kept away from the meeting you called in Bangalore. How can you play a role at the centre when your base in Karnataka is knocked out?
Sadhu Yadav (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:44 IST)
Deve Gowdasaar, Namaskara. Sir, I thought you did a fine job as prime minister and I am not saying that because I am a Kannadiga. Still, I am rather perturbed by what you will do now. What do ex-PMs do? And especially someone who is as young (by Indian political standards) as you? How do you think you can contribute to this nation?

rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:45 IST)
Namakaram! Gowda ri! How long will U keep Gujral as PM??
Tahseen Khateeb (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:45 IST)
Mr. Gowda: Do you have any startegy to weed out corruption from politics?
illora (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:45 IST)
What is your opinion about reservation system for any weaker section in general? Dont u think it is creating a tension between various section of society ?
Gust (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:47 IST)
Sir, now that you are no longer the PM, what good works do you engage in?
hegde (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:48 IST)
Any chance of all you former JD people getting together again -- incl Laloo Yadav, R K Hegde, etc, or will personal egos (incl yours) come in the way?!
Pandurang Shastri (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:48 IST)

There should not be any reservation for any body. Study hard and get the seat. If you deserve it get the job otherwise out the door!. When we will stop this reservation. It all starts from the Govt.. ina way we are discriminating these casts by giving them reservations.. then we claim do not look at them with hate..?/
Sampurna Adiga (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:50 IST)
Thank you for your gracious response, Sir. But I am puzzled. Why is that whenever the Congress is in power, they always last a full term. And yet when a party like the JD or Janata Party comes to power, it falls apart in no time at all. Is it because of blind ambition?
rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:50 IST)
Why do u leaders keep giving "bashans" about Corruption but do nothing about it or rather encourage it tactily or directly??
hegde (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:50 IST)
Sir, Congress was led by Mahatma Gandhi, today it is misleading the country. Similarly, the Janata parivar was led by JP, but today, it is proving singularly unfit to stay on. Forget JP, and the committed workers, will you leaders let your party survive?
Jatindra Amin (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:50 IST)
Mr Deve Gowda: In your tenure as the Prime minister, you betrayed the principles of Jai Prakash Naraian. Jai Prakashji, sacrificed his life for the cause of SOCIALISM in this country. And you were acting like a puppet in Davos when you went to invite foreign investors in our country. I think your answer is that of a peculiar politician. Preach something and prcatice the right opposite???
rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:51 IST)
Why do u leaders keep giving "bashans" about Corruption but do nothing about it or rather encourage it tactily or directly??
amit (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:51 IST)
Mr. Gowda, A lot of people including a section of the press accused you of being the Prime Minister of Karnataka, as a record number of projects were cleared in the state during your tenure and also because of the frequent trips you made to Bangalore as PM? What do you have to say regarding this?
Lionel (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:51 IST)

Mr. Gowda: Arrange in the order of sriousness of the problem our country is facing: Communalism, poor law & order, poverty, corruption, instable govts, nudity & voilence in movies, poor captainship by Tendulkar.
Venugopal (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:53 IST)
Dear Mr Gowda, tell me -- what went wrong between you and Laloo? You were bosom pals at one time, to the extent of eating mangoes together....
rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:53 IST)
What is your stand on the corruption charges against LalooYadav and Sharad yadav. You are opposing Laaloo but not Sharad! Is this not Double-standards?
illora (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:53 IST)
Mr Gowda, I think at many point indian history has been distorted and misinterpreted and I always feel that our history has to be revisited so that our children can know the actual history of our country. What do u think?
Gust (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:54 IST)
Why do you and the rest of the UF endure a Kesri. Isn't it better to let him take his non-existent chance in an election. At least his meaningless arrogance will be contained.
rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:54 IST)
Gowdaji! Why do u keep calling youself as Humble farmer??
Abdul Kaskar (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:54 IST)
hank you for your kind response. What are the perculiar challenges that a prime minister in a coalition regime has to face? Could you enlighten us about this?
Venugopal (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:55 IST)
Was your last speech as PM in parliament off-the-cuff or a rehearsed one?
Gust (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:56 IST)
Do you continue to advise Gujral on his method of functioning? Also, are you still kindly disposed towards Rao?

JANI (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:57 IST)
Mr Gowda: ARe there any chances of you becoming the Prime minister of India once again?
amit (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:58 IST)
Mr. Gowda, I would also like to ask the same question that venugopal asked.
illora (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:58 IST)
Mr Gowda, have you ever faced any sort of negligence if not discrimination being a political figure from South India , as there is a notion that southern politicians are never given much importance in national politics which is heavily dominated by north ?
goswami (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:59 IST)
hello guys

Mr Gowda:Supporters of Laloo Prasad Yadav have been saying that you are the only person responsible for Laloo's current state of affair? Or Will you like to state that famous Indian politicians line, "LAW WILL TAKE IT'S OWN COURSE.:) :)
Sumit (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:59 IST)
Gowdaji! In the North India, where most people only understand Hindi, how do you communicate with people with speeches ???
rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 19:59 IST)
Why are u reluctant to be the Chief Minister again? Do you think thatyou are a superior human justbecause u have been PM? please don't tell me u want to serve the nation because u should be atleast an Union Minister then.

Shri Gowda, what do you say regarding the present state of United Front ? Doesn't this party need to put its own house in order so that it can rule better ? What steps are being taken ?
Lionel (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:0 IST)
Mr HD DG,Mr IKG was Indias best Foreign Minister ,but what has gone wrong with him as PM.Why does he look so weak on that kursi. Can India and its 950/960 million afford a weak PM in this fast changing world.
goswami (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:0 IST)
sir why u have granted several lakhs of crores of rupees to karnataka only while u were pm for a year or so but not to other states ?

Mr Gowda: Why did you attend the POLITICAL RALLIA of the Laloo Prasad in Bihar?
Sumit (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:1 IST)
Looks like DG ji is again taking a nap like his PM days :-)
raviv (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:2 IST)
Mr Gowda, I believe only pre-election alliances should be recongnised and not post election alliances. The post alliance scenario breeds power brokering, and is a violation of the people's mandate. We can then be spared of the shenanigans of opportunists. Your opinion ??
Venugopal (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:2 IST)
sonny (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:2 IST)
Why every politician avoid reservation question again and again. I can never figure it out. Any way if you do not want to answer that is O.K with me. I Know all these resevations are voting banks nothing else.

arvind (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:8 IST)
Gowdaji, you haven't answered why you are reluctant to take up the post of Union Minister or CM. That way you can serve the country. Do you think you are above being a Minister just because you were PM?

Sudhir (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:25 IST)
Gowda: Your tenure as PM was at best pathetic. You have no vision nor the inclination to move things forward. Your choice of C.M Ibrahim as civil aviation minister is proof enough. The man thinks patriotism is more important than economic prosperity. On the economic front the performance was miserable. You never took any hard decisions..and always came up with this cock and bull stories about being a poor humble farmer. Poor and Humble..my foot. Your sons are the biggest rowdies in Bangalore..
arvind (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:27 IST)
GOWDAJI!!! now u know why u r unpopular. u r selfish and didn't answer any of our questions we asked in all sincerity. This is the way u behave in real life too. You are all greedy and I have no sympathy for what the old man in a hurry did to you. You have all of us worked up by ignoring us.

You left with a lot of goodwill. But your disappearance from the scene, post-PMship, your personal feud with Laloo, your hate relationship with Gujral, your inability to do anything for your country now -- all of these have eroded that. What do you plan to do now?
Sumit (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:31 IST)
Mr. Gowda, would you like to share your views about Arun Shourie's book about BRA ??????

TO ALL THE PARTICIPANTS. Today it is proved that our politicians cannot handle a problematic situation. This humble farmer was supposed to be India's ex PM & look at him running away at the time of a minor crisis in a chat show, that can do no harm to him at all. Good Lord-Where Is India Heading?

Good point Lionel. We have nothing much to celebrate in our GoldenJublee of Independence. Any progress the nation has made is despite these Creatures and not due to tis creatures. The way things are here, even Verappan will become of CM of TN, Gawli will head Maharashtra , Laloo will become PM!!! Too badd.

Shri Deve Gowda, thank you for appearing on this Chat. There are many ill mannered people among us Indians ovseas. I have just one thing to say to you Sir: Thank you for returning India to the rule of law, for ensuring that people do not get away with murder because they are in high office. We are proud of you sir and I hope you will have an opportunity to serve our country soon!

Amit:Thanx for remembering me.India is in a pathetic state at the moment. The major issues today R not what we can do for betterment for India, but Rabri,Phoolan(who threatened to light herself up:Who cares anyway)Veerappan ,wheter kesri is happy, whether sonia is going to enter politics etc. This very sad and has totally disheartened me.Drastic measures R required. If not Army rule a benevolent Dictator should take over(some body like Lee of singapore,Mahatir of malaysia etc)this Democracy business is only a medium used to fool us by the 540 odd clowns we elect to rule us.

well, mr gowda the governments could claim of equal opportunity, oppressed etc, making a huge issue out of this and forgetting to create opportunities at all. that is the point. opportunities today level whatever objectives the goverments couldnt do for the past 50 years

Thank you gowdaji for answering my question. It is just very difficult to findout who is a reliable, honest, trusworthy politician these days.
raviv (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:57 IST)

Gowda ji, when politicians begin to realise that we the People of India want things straight... not running around in a jungle of words that actually don't say anything...on the 50th I-Day, I wanna scream..."AWAKE, MY PEOPLE AWAKE!! THROW OUT THE USELESS BAGGAGE THAT PRETENDS TO "RULE" our Glorious Homeland.Mr Gowda ji polish your act!!

raviv (Tue Aug 5 1997 20:59 IST)
s b ACHARYA, stop sucking up to gowda, it is this kind of subservient behaviour that makes these politicians think they have a right to behave the way they do. What do you mean ill mannered? Do you want to suck up to him or question him ? Get a life ..
rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 21:0 IST)
Gowdaji, Please answer our query about You and Your Party's stand visavis the Kerla's high court decision regarding Bandh!! (and PLEASE STOP ALL YOUR LONG BHASHAN!!)
Lionel (Tue Aug 5 1997 21:2 IST)
RAO & ACHARYA-You r the best POLISHERS I have seen.Is it some delayed approval in Karnataka or R U genuine lovers of this man. This Gowda is a waste of space and time.He was never Indias best PM or were both U guys born during his tenure, not to have heard of Jwaharlal,Shastri, etc. We should stop this psycophancy immediately. This is our biggest ill after these Politicians.
rag (Tue Aug 5 1997 21:3 IST)
also to add, even today equality is a mockery in india as to what? education, health, services, do everyone gets it in straight simple form so if any govt or politicial head could claim any credit, it is an disgrace to truth. india's health sector is an example of how not to do things. you will be surprised to see how these sectors have been addressed in countries like china,

raviv & lionel: It is up to us to get rid of the crap in politics by not supporting and 'sucking-up' to the nerds around the Houses of Parliament. We need a large broom to clean out the cobwebs! Wanna help?
rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 21:3 IST)
Hey! Has Gowdaji "rented" a few users to write "jai jai" in his name??? It seems to be so with the likes of Acharya, NkRao appearing in this chat!
amit (Tue Aug 5 1997 21:3 IST)
Lionel: Yes I think you are right regarding a tough politician but I am sceptical regarding the idea of a 'benevolent' dictator. Because there's no surity that the benevolent dictator will not turn malevolent. Yes, I also admire LKY if Singapore ( I liked one of his quotes, "Democracy does not mean indicipline"). But I also remember what happened in Singapore in the last election. People were literally FORCED to vote. And RIGHT to vote also contain right not to vote. Moreover, as I said (last day) also, I think India is unique in many respects and certainly can't be compared with the likes of Singapore. Our problems does not have a simple solution.
rajg (Tue Aug 5 1997 21:5 IST)
