Stiff hike in postal tariffs
The 2001-02 Budget Wednesday made a stiff hike in the postal tariffs, doubling the cost of post cards and raising charges for various other services. A printed post card will now cost Rs 3, and increase of Re1 and competition post card will now cost Rs 5 instead of Rs 4. There will be a uniform Re 1 increase for letters weighing in excess of 20 gms and book, pattern and sample package. Registered newspapers will also attract a higher tariff. Parcels in excess of 500 gms will attract a tariff of Rs 16 instead of Rs 12 at present and those above 500 gms will continue to be charged at Rs 15. Registration will now cost Rs 17 instead of Rs 14. Concessional fee for registration has been doubled from Rs 1.25 to Rs 2.50. Acknowledgement of delivery fee has been raised from Rs 2 to Rs 3. The fee for book packets containing printed books and periodicals have been hiked ranging from 50 paise to Re 1.
