India not to allow 'hire-and-fire' policy, says Maran

EXIM POLICY

India's Commerce and Industry Minister Murasoli Maran today said India will not allow adoption of a hire-and-fire policy for the present.

"A labour commission has been appointed and we will have a national discussion before even thinking of adopting a hire-and-fire policy. We cannot allow a hire-and-fire policy as of now,'' Maran said at a meeting organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, or FICCI, here.

The central government is also discussing with state governments to consider units exporting over 50 per cent of their production as 'public utilities'.

"We are talking with state governments to see if some facilities can be provided to these units.''

Speaking on the occasion, FICCI president G P Goenka said that the new Exim Policy has created an atmosphere for making exports a national imperative.

The steps taken in the policy will make India's export drive a qualitatively different endeavour. "I am sure the new approach will pay rich dividends.''
