Pallone demands review of unilateral sanctionsDemocratic Congressman Frank Pallone has demanded a Congressional hearing on the United States' unilateral sanctions against India, as well as the so-called entities list which bars certain institutions and companies in dealing with the US. He made the demand in a letter to house foreign relations committee chairman Benjamin Gilman. Pallone said the administration had cast too wide a net in listing entities. ''They are subject to a prohibition on exports and re-exports of items deemed to be involved in nuclear or missiles -- often indirectly so,'' he added. ''I believe it would be instructive to hear from a variety of sources how the sanctions and the entities list have affected the US, opportunities in the region relative to other industrialised nations vying for entry into this emerging market, and how they affect diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving stability and confidence-building measures in south Asia,'' he added.
