Economists urge India to utilise Amartya Sen's wisdom

India will do well to adopt and apply the ideas of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen in order to achieve its goal of an equitable society.

His trail-blazing theoretical work highlighting the acute relevance of entitlement, deprivation, education, gender justice and basic health need to be integrated into the country's development process.

These views were expressed by distinguished economists at a panel discussion in New Delhi on ''Contributions of Amartya Sen to Economics''.

Those who took part in the proceedings included Dr Badal Mukherjee, director of Delhi School of Economics, Dr Isher Judge Ahluwalia, director and chief executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, Dr Shiv Kumar, consultant with the United Nations and Dr Brenda Gael McSweeney, UN resident coordinator.

The meeting was organised by the Capital Foundation Society.

Dr McSweeney said many believe that it is in fact Professor Sen who has honoured the Nobel prize. The prize that he would value is to see the day when everyone in India has capabilities developed to their fullest potential and when the economy can provide them all the opportunities to make use of these capabilities for their own welfare and for the future generations.

''So many of us do not think of Amartya Sen as the practitioner of what has been dubbed the dismal science,'' she said adding that Professor Sen was a ''warm and insightful person, thoughtful and considerate, caring about the welfare of people, especially the disadvantaged sections''.
